Rollo Tomasi wrote:Don't know how many of you saw Julie Beck's GC talk yesterday. Here's how it is described in today's Trib:

Perhaps the most controversial speaker on Sunday, though, was Julie Beck, the new president of the church's all-women Relief Society, who talked about the powerful influence of motherhood.

Faithful Mormon women want children and do not delay child-bearing, Beck said, quoting the late LDS President Ezra Taft Benson as saying, "children - not possessions, not position, not prestige - are our greatest jewels."

Mormon mothers honor their sacred covenants by bringing daughters to church "in clean and ironed dresses with hair brushed to perfection; their sons wear white shirts and ties and have missionary haircuts," Beck said.

They establish a good climate where children can be nourished physically and spiritually. "Another word for nurturing is homemaking," Beck said. It ''includes cooking, washing clothes and dishes, and keeping an orderly house.''

In partnership with their husbands, mothers "plan for missions, temple marriages and education," she said. These women "are selective about their own activities and involvement to conserve their limited strength in order to maximize their influence where it matters most."

The speech triggered a firestorm of criticism on the Mormon blog timesandseasons.org from listeners who objected to Beck's stereotyping of women's roles or guilt-inducing comments about the necessity of being the best mothers in the world.

Sis. Beck is a real throwback to the 50's.

I must say I found the talk just hideeous and felt extremely;y stressed when I listened to it for the women in the Church, my wife and my 25 year old career oriented daughter. When I asked her about it she said she thought it was just awful and will ignore it. Yes know PP she is just a horrible example of LDS womanhood.

That's exactly the response of my 29 year old career oriented daughter. She figures Relief Society is totally irrelevent to her life anyway, since she's single and has no intention of getting married any time soon.

That reminds me of how I felt as a young 18 and 19 year-old Elder. All the talk in Elder's Quorum was about families, raising kids, etc. I felt like a fifth wheel.
"Finally, for your rather strange idea that miracles are somehow linked to the amount of gay sexual gratification that is taking place would require that primitive Christianity was launched by gay sex, would it not?"

You were supposed to feel envious and anxious to start your own family. Sheesh, Shades!

My oldest has been married five years and no kids yet. She says she really should not have children yet because she knows she would beat them.

Re Beck's talk she asked "So if an LDS woman does not desire children she is not spiritual according to Sister Beck? What about LDS women who have them all the same but really did not want them?"

Silly, Jason.

Don't you know that the Church is all about appearances?

Sis Beck would call your daughter to repentence quite harshly, I suspect. She'd say your daughter needs to straighten up her attitude, and quit being selfish, that there are many Saints waiting to get their bodies and your daughter putting off having children is detrimental to the Plan of Salvation (the copywrited LDS version). She'd call your daughter a slacker and castigate you as her father, for not raising her with the proper subservience towards her leaders. And then she'd blame your daughter (and women like her) for destroying the family, the church, and delaying the 2nd coming.

Perhaps

My guess is my daughter would politely listen then tell her to mind her own business and go suck eggs. She had already put a number of "well meaning" people in their place who have sought to instruct her on this topic and she is not bashful about doing so. Even when I kid around with her about giving me some grand kids she bristles.

Mothers are quickly becoming an endangered species, hunted down by liberal idiots who are so short sighted they can't see the longstandign benefits of a woman in the home rearing good children.

What this woman said should be placed under the windshield wiper of every woman dropping her kids off at a day care center.

GAG. And I'm sure you're one of those Mormons who thinks that women are responsible for a mans sexuality. They are walking pornography for Christ's sake.

How about we just put burkas on them Gaz and forbid them from coming out of the home?

Of course I'm sure by the same token with you that if we took the "Mormon Equation" out of it, suddenly they wouldn't be rearing good children anymore, right? Because, of course, being Mormon is the key to it all, really.

A Burka can be quite sexy on the right person. I would love to see this Lady attend the next General Conference and we can all hope for a windy day.
