In 1862 Congressman Morrill got a bill passed that made it illegal to have more than one wife in the territory of Utah. They called it bigamy. A “nation with the soul of a church” went up against a “church with the soul of a nation” as author Kathleen Flake put it.
The nation was concerned about the women and children of Utah.
It is not known but could be hypothesized that United States government knew and studied the thoughts expressed in Doctrine and Covenants, section 121. Whether it be directly ;) or through other literature.
“ 39 We have learned by sad experience that it is the nature and disposition of almost all men, as soon as they get a little authority, as they suppose, they will immediately begin to exercise unrighteous dominion.
40 Hence many are called, but few are chosen.
41 No power or influence can or ought to be maintained by virtue of the priesthood, only by persuasion, by long-suffering, by gentleness and meekness, and by love unfeigned;
42 By kindness, and pure knowledge, which shall greatly enlarge the soul without hypocrisy, and without guile—
43 Reproving betimes with sharpness, when moved upon by the Holy Ghost; and then showing forth afterwards an increase of love toward him whom thou hast reproved, lest he esteem thee to be his enemy”
There really was no difference between the latter-day saints of early Utah and the Saudi’s of today. Teach in school that the United States is the enemy. Polygamy is of God. Give all that you have, even your life, for the cause, for great will be your reward in heaven.
Long suffering is one quality that the United States had at that time. During the next forty years as the leaders of early Utah preached that the United States was the enemy, wrote their own laws, blatantly disregarded the laws of the territories, the United States Supreme Court made rulings and Congress passed laws aimed at taking out the last of the twin relics of barbarism.
Today’s children in Utah can thank their lucky stars that during the nation’s civil war that they still had Utah’s women and children minds in mind and tried to help. Today the LDS church preaches that one woman and one man is the ideal for marriage; that children should have a mother and father at home at night. This is the present ideal. But if it wasn’t due to the kindness and long suffering of the people of the United States, polygamy would be thriving today in Utah. Children would only periodically see their father, who likely was a strict authoritarian, which likely didn’t produce a loving environment.
Lets hear it for Congressman Merrill and President Lincoln: hip hip hara.
LDS Children can thank Mr. Morrill and Mr. Lincoln.

Considering that Brigham Young taught that the government of the United States was the closest nation on Earth to the Millenial Kingdom I don't think they hated the United States. That they had problems with the current leaders of the U.S. is true but I suspect most of us have lived through a President we didn't trust at all. I haven't trusted one since George Bush the Elder.

Hi Style Guy...
Very nice!
Yep.. we have a very good picture of what the church would be like without Merrill and Lincoln stepping in to help and bring a sense of decency and care to women and children. The FLDS.
Ohhh thank goodness for these men and others who had the sense of compassion, and concern for human rights, dignity, and respect towards women!
I hope someday there are similarly enough good people who will no longer tolerate those organizations who continue to consider women as second class citizens, subjected to their husbands, absent of any "authority," and subservient to men.

The early Mormon leadership had various stages of love and hate for the US government. They did believe the US Government would be replaced by their theocracy in the near future, when Christ came again. At the same time, they taugh that the founding fathers and constitution were divinely inspired. But you also have the infamous "greasespot" prophecy, which of course never came true. Ever since the leadership was schooled in the Reed Smoot hearings, the church has had a very good relationship with the government, and has become one of the most patriotic organizations in the country.
by the way Nehor, I love your sig. Is that your quote, or did you get it from someone else?
