My TBM GF's latest gem

Post by _Scottie »

My TBM girlfriend and I were talking about problems in the Book of Mormon. I told her about horses, but left it at that as to not turn it into a "I'm trying my damndest to convince you that the church isn't true".

Her response, "Welll...there may be a few little things like that, but I've heard that archaeologists actually use the Book of Mormon when studying ancient America! There is TONS in there that has been proven true!!"

<sigh>

The phrase "I've heard" covers a lot of ground. Where did she hear that? In church? In seminary? From a friend? If she heard it from the pulpit is a lot different than if she heard it from her friends or family.

Next time, ask her for an example or two.
"Finally, for your rather strange idea that miracles are somehow linked to the amount of gay sexual gratification that is taking place would require that primitive Christianity was launched by gay sex, would it not?"

I will try to complete this in a couple posts. I have an old Book of Mormon in front of me, the blue cover with the statue of moroni in the lower right section. I either got this when I left primary or when I was bapitized somewhere between 1969 and 1973.

it has picture of this site:

Image

underneath it says: "THIS TEMPLE, BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN ERECTED DURING THE MAYA CLASSIC PERIOD, CONTAINS THE FAMOUS CROSS OF PALENQUE. MANY ARCHEOLOGIST NOW AGREE THAT THESE ARTISTIC MASTER PIECES DATE BACK TO THE BEGINNING OF THE CHRISTIAN ERA.

I'll give them a little slack on this one -post "moroni" give or take fifty years.

That is pretty sad. I'm actually astonished, though I know I shouldn't be, how long-lived that Faith-Promoting Rumor is. It is especially thread bare.

ANOTHER PICTURE SHOWS THIS SITE:

UNDERNEATH IT SAYS: GENERAL VIEW OF THE SACRED CITY OF MACHU PICCHU - "JEWEL OF THE ANDIES", BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN BUILT OVER 2000 YEARS AGO.

wikipedia says it was built in the 1400's.

That's hilarious. An archaeologist using the Book of Mormon to study ancient America is like a hockey player using a cooked noodle to perform a slap shot. She might as well start reading the Conan books to get a proper understanding of the history of the middle east 10,000 years ago.

So... since she believes this stuff and remains your girlfriend, can I assume she's smokin' hot?
God belief is for people who don't want to live life on the universe's terms.

if your girlfriend is getting information from the church, which I listed above, then I guess it's not her fault. If she was born into the Church then just give her information a little at a time and ask her to research it.

Not only that, but she's just an amazing girl! I've never been so compatible with a girl...TBMishness notwithstanding...

I've dated hot girls before, but they are have all been really boring with no real connection. We really have a great connection, which is sooo hard to find.

So, yes, she's worth it. Even if I have to roll my eyes occasionally.

Actually, Elder Boyd K. Packer spoke about this, cautioning members not to treat the Book of Mormon as a history, and I suppose by extension, a geography manual.

Yes, there are naïve LDS out there. (I am not one of them, despite reports to the contrary.) And lots of people pass on urban myths. Anyone hear the one about two little old white ladies who are on an elevator when Kobe Bryant gets on with two German shepherd dogs.........

I have never heard South American/Mesoamerican geography taught by a General Authority from the pulpit. Now, I have heard people put forth their own speculations. And often times the more naïve take someone's speculations, and then go around blatting about how somebody said something was really true.
