Everyone plays One Up. You're playing it too; you're don't think any of us are going to hell. That puts you above anyone who thinks someone [else] is going to hell.
How so Harmony? I'm above those that believe people go to hell? I don't really see it that way.
There are people that believe in all sorts of stuff and I have different views and I don't necessarily consider my views 'better' or 'one uppish'. Just different.

I don't think I'm one up on anyone. I think we're all equal, which is the superior way to think.
Oh wait... that makes me one up everyone with my way of thinking. Maybe I'll think it's an inferior way to think, then I'll be playing one down, and nobody can accuse me of playing one up. That'll put me ahead of the game... wait, but then, by being ahead, I'll be one upping everyone by one downing myself.
Oh well, as long as I come out equal in the end.
God belief is for people who don't want to live life on the universe's terms.
Jersey Girl wrote:Define hell, monkeys. Or anyone...
I can't define hell. I have absolutely no understanding of what that term means really.
I have seen images and read interpretations of what hell means to others. It has no clearly defined meaning for me. I was interested in other views on what it meant to them and whether or not it was something people feared.

Please elaborate.
If you didn't see your way of thinking as better than the "others" who believe in hell, you'd join them. But you don't, because you think your way is better. Better = One Up on all those "others".

Really? Hmmm.. well how could I possibly believe in all the different interpretations of hell? I don't join them just because I don't believe in God.
I've tried, desperately, to believe in God. With the sincerest desire and intent. It's not happening... I suppose?
Anyway, I don't view myself as better than those that believe in God, hell, or heaven. I just completely understand that good people can have radically different opinions and belief systems. I don't care one way or the other...

The whole concept of hell is a disturbing one. I mean, what kind of bastard would create something like hell? We do the best we can here on earth given our situation, environment, capacities, intelligence, constraints, knowledge, etc., and if we don't do exactly what our "loving father" wants us to do, he condemns us to eternal suffering. What a swell guy!
We aren't servile enough for his tastes, if we don't guess correctly which of the many people claiming to speak for him is the right one (not to mention the billions who have had no chance to guess correctly or who were born into religious and cultural traditions that make it extremely unlikely that they would accept God's true word anyway) then he tosses us off like so much trash into the fire to suffer forever (or in the Mormon case, he banishes us from his and our loved one's presence).
The being who came up with this sytem is a psychopathic bastard.
God . . . "who mouths morals to other people and has none himself; who frowns upon crimes, yet commits them all; who created man without invitation, . . . and finally, with altogether divine obtuseness, invites this poor, abused slave to worship him ..."

Unless hell was the environment where they could find the most peace and joy. The last kindness God gives to people who will accept no other gift. Hell is hell from the vantage point of heaven (and Earth) but to those there it is not.
Also, nobody does 'the best they can'. I'm doing good to make it through a day without at least one, "That was stupid" moment.

Hi Guy, without question, (at least none from me ;-) you've "one-upped" everyone. Except maybe for me, eh? I figger i double-upped most of the others who don't seem to know much about 'odds'. Hey, maybe being LDS they are more experienced with 'odds' than i @ 1st imagined?? But, what-the-hell... Warm regards, Roger
Jersey Girl wrote:Define hell, monkeys. Or anyone...
You didn't ask me but I define it as the space where none of God's presence extends. It's a messed up place
Thanks, Nehor. I think you qualifiy as "or anyone"! The concept of "hell" is a relatively new invention.
If you limit it to what people called hell then yes but the idea of an underworld or place of darkness seems as old as humanity. I'm not big on titles myself
I totally screwed up here. I should have said that the word "hell" was a relatively new invention. Sheesh. In the Bible, "hell" was substituted for "Gehenna" which was a real place. Gehenna (and Tophet) were real places where there was indeed death, destruction, torment, rotting corpses, decay and fire. There is no "hell" in Judiasim at all. Could it be that the fires of hell that many Christians believe in is simply a mistranslation?
Possibly so....
