I want to make myself clear - it is not misogyny to wonder if a poster is male or female, or to even ask. It is not misogyny to think certain traits tend to demonstrate more in one sex than the other. It is misogyny to think you can insult a man by calling him a woman.

I've calmed down now and invite crocket to try to explain himself. He claims he has good evidence scratch is a female, and that's all he meant. I admit, at the onset, to finding this a pathetic excuse, but will listen to his explanation now that I've calmed down.

Bob mentioned earlier that his kids posted here. Maybe he suspects that Scratch is one of his kids incognito?

That would be an interesting twist!

;)

Do enlighten us further on why you feel Scratch is female, Bob.

Curious minds would like to know.

If Scratch is a kid, I for one am going to be incredibly impressed. He writes very well.

"Mr. Scratch" very well could be a "Ms. Scratch". As far as I know, no one on this board knows for sure what "he" is. My own suspicion has always been that he is a sock-puppet of one of the posters on this board.

Beastie, I'm not sure offense was warranted--in this case.

I couldn't see that he was using "woman" in a derogatory sense--the way a misogynist would. Now, if he'd used a genuinely misogynistic epithet (the one which is allowed in telestial) to describe Scratch, then I think you'd have a right to be offended; anyone who uses that term is a "misogynist".

Ever since the world began
Woman has tried to rule the man
She committed the first offense
And she’s been after him ever since.

G-d created the earth, and He rested then
G-d created man, and He rested again
Then G-d created woman for man’s defense
And neither G-d nor man have rested since.

Even if Bob meant it as an insult and not because he thought Scratch was female, it doesn't indicate misogyny/hate of women. Your reaction indicates you are either hyper-sensitive regarding this or you have a dislike of Bob or both. Yes, it is an insult to call a male, a female deliberately. It can mean the guy is weak, a wimp, too emotional, too gossipy, gay etc. That doesn't mean the person insulting hates women. The insult wouldn't work if women weren't associated with those adjectives.

In this very thread Beastie you are acting like a woman, because You are too emtional, too hypersensitive to an insult. Most guys typically wouldn't have reacted like you have. And by the way, you notice the insult doesn't faze Scratch.

Had you not blown this out of proportion it would be justifible for Bob to respond to you, but attempting to set up a lynch mob mentality in the rest of the board leaves Bob in a no-win position. He know there are various people willing to come to your defense, including some wimpy men, because you have the board on your side with the majority. I don't mean in this particular instance. It wouldn't just be a discussion between you and him.

This board does have little to talk about when it's going after little insults with such vengence of the sort Bob.

So even if Bob thought Scratch was male and called him...Ms, so what! If the church has promoted a misogynist attitude in men, that's the culprit. Just because Bob called Scratch a Ms..does not indicate he has a hateful attitude toward women.

I seem to recall someone else suspecting that Mister Scratch was in fact a female. I had therefore assumed that rcrocket used it as a means of intimidation as in "we know your true identity".

I disagree marg. It is that very association that is misogynistic. However, I think it is possible to inslut someone by calling males, female and females, male all without being misogynistic nor misandronistic.

I really have no need to continue discussing this, unless bob chooses to provide clarification. But I will address some points raised:

1 – is the term misogynist too strong? Maybe. Technically, a misogynist hates or dislikes women. It’s possible that bob simply does not respect women, but still “likes” them in some way. So if misogynist seems too strong, insert whatever term you want to denote a man who disrespects women enough to get the idea that he could insult someone who identifies himself as a man by referring to him as “Ms.”

2 – is it always misogynist (or sexist) to insult a person by calling them the opposite sex? As with everything else in life, context is crucial. If, during a ball game, one ballplayer tells another he “throws like a girl”, that insult does not necessarily signify dislike or disrespect of women. Women do tend to throw differently than men due to our physiological differences. Other examples can be found. Bob, however, just started calling scratch “Ms. Scratch”.

3 – Scratch wasn’t insulted, why are you? The pertinent question is not whether or not Scratch was insulted, but whether or not he believed Bob was calling him “Ms. Scratch” as an insult. In other words – did Bob intend to insult Scratch? I think the answer is clearly yes, unless a lot of background information is missing.

Lastly, my personal favorite from marg:

Even if Bob meant it as an insult and not because he thought Scratch was female, it doesn't indicate misogyny/hate of women. Your reaction indicates you are either hyper-sensitive regarding this or you have a dislike of Bob or both. Yes, it is an insult to call a male, a female deliberately. Marg seems to assert that people can – without being misogynist, or, more exactly, without disrespecting women – call a man a woman because he is being weak, wimpy, too emotional, too gossipy, gay because women are associated with those concepts.

Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Yes, marg, women are associated with those concepts, and that is why it is viewed as an insult. But the fact that our society has chosen to describe characteristics in women that men also share in a pejorative fashion, while, at times, describing the exact same characteristics in men in a favorable fashion is not indicative of the fact that society is justified in attaching these negative attributes to women, but rather is indicative of the fact that we have long lived in a very sexist society.

You say I’m acting like a woman because I’m being too emotional and too sensitive. Now, the funny thing is the only emotion I felt was ANGER. And I expressed it quite directly. I got in bob’s face.

Gee. I though that was what society says men do – and often praises them for it. I thought women brood, sulk, do passive aggressive things, while men get straight in an offender's face and push.

A bit of a mixed message, eh? Actually, no, the message isn’t mixed at all, as long as you really understand what the message actually is. The message is that attributes that both men and women share are negative when attached to females, and praiseworthy when attached to males. Like frequent sex? You’re a stud if you’re a man, a slut if you’re a woman.

Surely this sounds vaguely familiar to you.
