I see little problem with this teaching. If it requires the consent of the wife and both men. The trickier area is the one of apostasy. However divorce was and still is probably under those circumstances.

Here's a fun scenario: You're an Elder. You just got married. Some High Priest comes up to you and says, "I want to marry your wife."

Wife is a little spoiled...sees older guy has more money and stability and says, "Later."

No divorce needed....no counsel needed either..no.."shouldn't you kids try to work this out?"

Just....yeah..he is a High Priest, so he deserves "first dibs".

Nice....

I could say no.

But then, why would any girl want to leave me? I'd be more concerned with having too many wives. ;)

Oh, good Lord, Nehor! You don't even have one wife, do you? Worry about getting one to stick around before you fret over controlling a harem!

Your continual references to your future passel of wives irritate the hell out of me!

OK. So I'm a Stake President and you're in the Elder's quorum presidency. I invite you and your wife to dinner. I flirt a little with your wife, she flirts back. A few days later I call you and her into my office and tell you that I want to marry your wife. She agrees, I agree, but you don't. Do you really think the matter will drop? I am your stake president and I want to marry your wife, she wants to marry me, it is ordained by God. The only reason you would object is because you are an apostate.

This was the precise reasoning of Brigham Young in demanding Henry Jacobs to hand over his wife, Zina Diantha Huntington.

This is the first time I have EVER heard this! This explains A LOT about Joseph's polyandry.

Where did you find this teaching? Was it documented in Compton's book or somewhere else?

It's in Compton's book. I don't have it in front of me, but I'll look it up later if you'd like.

I'd like to see where he taught that; never heard it before either.

Look at pages 16-23. Compton also cites D&C 132:7, which states:

And verily I say unto you, that the conditions of this law are these: All covenants, contracts, bonds, obligations, oaths, vows, performances, connections, associations, or expectations, that are not made and entered into and sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, of him who is anointed, both as well for time and for all eternity, and that too most holy, by revelation and commandment through the medium of mine anointed, whom I have appointed on the earth to hold this power (and I have appointed unto my servant Joseph to hold this power in the last days, and there is never but one on the earth at a time on whom this power and the keys of the priesthood are conferred), are of no efficacy, virtue, or force in and after the resurrection from the dead; for all contracts that are not made unto this end have an end when men are dead.

According to Compton, this allowed Joseph to argue that all civil marriages were not of God and invalid, and that the spouse was free to marry Joseph under this new law.
