LDS and ex-LDS Self-Medication
Often I see comments about how common it is for LDS to pop the happy pills to endure their hardships. I just as often see people twittering (hurrahing) on the board about drinking.
So... really, is it all that different? What's the deal? Is it that one is taboo and naughty?
Cause as an outsider it appears to me that some of you may have changed one sucking-thumb-rocking-happy-place-spot for another.

Honestly, this irritates the hell out of me. To me it trivializes real mental illness in order to score a few cheap points in a debate about religion.

Well it irritates I as well... that's why I started this thread. Particularly irritating is those that guzzle the spirits and like to lob the happy pill insult at their opponent.

I don't drink every day. Sometimes I will be dry for weeks.
If I am correct, the happy pills are needed daily?
I don't understand how one gets to the point that they feel they need a daily pill to give them a good out look on life.
I drink for the fun of it, and am in no way dependant on it to be happy.
Attitude determines altitude, I say..

I wish it were that easy. Depression sucks.

I'm currently taking Celexa for depression. I've taken Prozac and Effexor in the past. I take Xanax as needed for anxiety. While it may seem like I drink a lot from the comments I make on the board, the truth is that I drink at most two nights a month. I try to avoid it with the medication I'm on. Depression is real. I suffered depression as an active, believing member and I suffer depression as a disbeliever. I don't give a f*** if people make fun of the medications I take.

I agree. I do not think LDS are using anti depressants in order to feel good cause they do not drink booze. They sue them the same reason anyone does. Because they have depression.

PP, the point is that you do self medicate. That you don't do it everyday doesn't change the fact that you do it!
Silentkid, I hope you know that I didn't start this thread to make fun of anyone that takes medication for depression or any ailment. I was trying to point out the hypocricy of those that drink and then make fun of others that take medication for different purposes.
PP was making fun, in another thread, of LDS that pop happy pills. I think it was fitting to point out that this is OFTEN seen on this board. I don't care if people self-medicate. I do however care to point out hypocricy when I see it.

I actually know quite a few people on medications that are prescribed for depression that are not depressed at all. But that's not really the point of this thread....... people take things for a variety of reasons. I don't care why they take em!

It's a good point. Although I would say that if the LDS person in question considers themselves morally superior to those that drink (or smoke hash, or whatever), then they probably deserve it.
Otherwise, I agree - I also think it's hypocritical.
