The Utah Ghost Investigators Society was on the radio today sharing their EVP's.
For those that don't know, EVP are Electronic Voice Phenomenons. These ghost investigators go into supposed haunted places, such as old prisons, and use tape recorders to record voices. They can't hear the voices as they are recording, but when they play the tapes back, there are voices recorded on them. Many times the voices seem to be a direct answer to the questions asked, or in context of the place they are visiting. They visited the Deer Lodge prison and the tour guide told them that one of the forms of punishment was that they would tie the prisoners back to back, and one of the EVP's is a recording of a guy saying, "They tied us back to back."

I don't believe these are ghosts, but I have yet to hear a feasible alternate explanation. I don't believe they are baby monitors, or stray radio waves.

I think the article linked in "The Ghosts We Want to See" spells it out pretty clearly.

I disagree. That article is talking more about "feelings" and superstitions. EVP's are concrete, undeniable voices recorded on a tape. Not some unverifiable premenition.
The voices are there. The question is, how did they get there? Are they ghosts manipulating enegry fields somehow? Is it some kind of space/time rift that we don't understand? Is it random radio waves?

At this point, I'd say EVP's are definitely something supernatural. I was watching a Ghosthunters episode yesterday (to gear up for Halloween) and they got some incredible EVP's at a store in San Francisco. I could even make out the voices and they made sense.
The owners believed the ghost was a woman named Jean who had worked at the store many years before. The investigators were asking questions, asking if she was Jean and if she wanted to say anything to the owners to let them know she was okay. The EVP's said clearly "There is no Jean here". Later they said "Please leave us alone"... I tell you it was creepy. Unless the Ghosthunters show was doctoring the stuff or making it up, if it was indeed the real thing, then it was very credible and unexplained.

The article was about filling in gaps, so in that case, our brains may hear sounds and fill in the gaps to make of them "concrete, undeniable voices." I'd vote for random radio waves, which our brains interpret as voices. Seems clear to me.

Have you actually listened to any of them?
I'd agree that some of them could be sound distortions that our minds fill in the gaps to create words where none exist. But others are undeniably human, english words. They are crystal clear and no argument whatsoever about what it is saying.
I'm just not buying the random radio waves explaination.
One theory is that matter can somehow absorb sounds, and at random times, for some unknown reason, release these sounds as electromagnetic fields which voice recorders then pick up.
