I'm not sure if it's a question of superiority. Let's put it this way though. I'd be perfectly willing to eat a mayonaise sandwich to prevent terrorist attacks. I find that to be about the most disguisting thing imaginable. However, eating mayonaise is not seen as immoral to me despite my personal hatred of the stuff.

I think even for you though, what you view as immoral does Trump personal disguist. Hence your refusal to violate another's agency to prevent terrorist attacks.

There you go and be all likeable and cool. :)

I guess my moral code is tied to violence rather than sexual issues.

Alright let's assume I could save 1000 people's lives by torturing a loved one who agrees to it (there's a mouth full....only on Mormon Discussions right?):

Will my family member be maimed for life (loss of limb, mutulation)?

Will they be killed?

Which family member/which sex (grandmother's and mothers are different from brothers)?

Interesting that those things would appear to change your answer. Extreme pain, maiming, death--I wouldn't have the stomach for any of it no matter the sex or relation of the loved one. I suppose in some sense that may make me a coward.

Why? I think it's true and a good point.

Well let's just say that if I could save a 1000 lives by slugging my brother a dozen times....I'd probably do it. If I had to chop off my grandmother's feet....I really doubt I'd do it. I mean you have to differentiate between degrees of whatever in life. You have to admit that the degree of effects something has changes things.

OK, now you're going too far.

The degree does indeed matter. I guess if all I had to do was call my brother a fool, I'd do that for free terrorist or not. But causing anyone intense pain as in torture is a bit much for me. Give someone a bloody nose and a black eye? You could probably talk me into it for 1001 lives.

Most of us have our infants get shots (some of which are incredibly painful) that DO ensure many lives are saved. It's hard as a mother to watch your infant screaming, balled up, fists clenched, red faced, tears streaming while we whisper soothingly in their ear knowing it's the best for them and society. We do it.

BIG torture. A little pain never hurt nobody. I'm fairly certain that my parts are in tact. I'm perfectly fine letting kids play, getted skinned knees, shots, etc. I'm not ok with subjecting someone to waterboarding, the rack, etc. even to save 1000 lives.

asbestosman, If your family was going to be killed and you had forewarning of this would you torture someone (BIG torture) to gain information as to how/when/where this attack would occur?

I would in a HEARTBEAT. No hesitation.

Well........ maybe a little hesitation....... but I'd get over it.
