For years, the Church has taught that the Lamanites in the Book of Mormon are the primary or principal ancestors of the American Indian.

The Lamanites were descendents of Lehi, who was Hebrew. DNA evidence refutes the Hebrew descention as a primary source.

Therefore, changing the wording in the Book of Mormon from "the Lamanites are the principal ancestors of the American Indian" to "the Lamanites are among the ancestors of the American Indian" is extremely significant.

It changes the entire meaning of the phrase, and directly disputes years of doctrinal teaching throughout the Church.

Edited to add---There is another thread in this forum which debates this issue rather thoroughly:

After how many years as a follower of Mormonism and how many wasted YEARS of time on these discussion boards and you ask a question like that?

DUH?

Speaking of a nutshell, with that revealing question, that's about the extent of your Mormon knowledge- it would fit in a nutshell.

Well, I'm not in a nutshell right now, but I'll take a shot. The phrase "they (The Lamanites) are the principal ancestors of the Native Americans" in the Book of Mormon intro has been a thorn in the side of the LGT apologists because in reality the principal ancestors of the Native Americans were the Asian Immigrants who came across the Behring Straight. The apologists have tried to explain it away as non-dcotrinal musings of Bruce R. McConkie, or tried to redefine "principal" to mean most important. Now that the church has jettisoned their theory of Lamanites being the principal ancestors of the Native Americans, they have removed one of the hurdles for the apologists limited geography theory.

Hell no.

The story was on KSL TV news at six.

KSL is not a news publication of record. Its output is not logged and achieved. The Church does not have much concern about it as an outlet so it has been more liberal than its print brethren for a long time.

Hi Jersey Girl...

Could someone, in a nutshell, explain to me what the significance of this is?

In addition to what others have stated, the Book of Mormon has many scriptures suggesting the land was saved for Lehi and his family. It was the promised land and as such (in spite of what apologists assert), was kept from inhabitants for them.

Until recently the promised land was considered the Americas but recently, due to more information, apologists suggest the promised land was a few acres of uninhabited land in the midst of the Mayan civilization.

This change in the introduction is a clear indicator that the former belief, still held by most of members, and still (until today maybe), taught is incorrect. Obviously I think things will change and in a few years no one will remember that there was even a change.

Anyone who brings up the previous teaching will be considered an anti-mormon liar.

That is a prophesy that is sure to come true!
I think it would be morally right to lie about your religion to edit the article favorably.

Please excuse me if this has already been posted - saw it on RfM.

According to the Prophet "The remnant [of the Nephites and Lamanites] are the Indians that now inhabit this country. "

Just plain are ... not 'amongst the ancestors'. Are.

Ho well. Speaking as a man again, I suppose.

CHURCH HISTORY

At the request of Mr. John Wentworth, Editor, and Proprietor of the "Chicago Democrat," I have written the following sketch of the rise, progress, persecution, and faith of the Latter-Day Saints, of which I have the honor, under God, of being the founder. Mr. Wentworth says, that he wishes to furnish Mr.Bastow, a friend of his, who is writing the history of New Hampshire, with this document. As Mr. Bastow has taken the proper steps to obtain correct information, all that I shall ask at his hands is that he publish the account entire, ungarnished, and without misrepresentation.

I was born in the town of Sharon, Windsor co., Vermont, on the 23d of December, A.D. 1805. When ten years old my parents removed to Palmyra, New York, where we resided about four years, and from thence we removed to the town of Manchester.

[...]

On the evening of the 21st of September, A.D. 1823, while I was praying unto God, and endeavoring to exercise faith in the precious promises of scripture on a sudden a light like that of day, only of a far purer and more glorious appearance, and brightness burst into the room, indeed the first sight was as though the house was filled with consuming fire; the appearance produced a shock that affected the whole body; in a moment a personage stood before me surrounded with a glory yet greater than that with which I was already surrounded. This messenger proclaimed himself to be an angel of God sent to bring the joyful tidings, that the covenant which God made with ancient Israel was at hand to be fulfilled, that the preparatory work for the second coming of the Messiah was speedily to commence; that the time was at hand for the gospel, in all its fulness to be preached in power, unto all nations that a people might be prepared for the millennial reign.

I was informed that I was chosen to be an instrument in the hands of God to bring about some of His purposes in this glorious dispensation.

I was also informed concerning the aboriginal inhabitants of this country [America], and shown who they were, and from whence they came; a brief sketch of their origin, progress, civilization, laws, governments, of their righteousness and iniquity, and the blessings of God being finally withdrawn from them as a people was made known unto me: I was also told where there was deposited some plates on which were engraven an abridgment of the records of the ancient prophets that had existed on this continent. The angel appeared to me three times the same night and unfolded the same things. After having received many visits from the angels of God unfolding the majesty and glory of the events that should transpire in the last days, on the morning of the 22d of September, A.D. 1827, the angel of the Lord delivered the records into my hands.

These records were engraven on plates which had the appearance of gold, each plate was six inches wide and eight inches long and not quite so thick as common tin. They were filled with engravings, in Egyptian characters and bound together in a volume, as the leaves of a book with three rings running through the whole. The volume was something near six inches in thickness, a part of which was sealed. The characters on the unsealed part were small, and beautifully engraved. The whole book exhibited many marks of antiquity in its construction and much skill in the art of engraving. With the records was found a curious instrument which the ancients called the "Urim and Thummim," which consisted of two transparent stones set in the rim of a bow fastened to a breastplate.

Through the medium of the Urim and Thummim I translated the record by the gift, and power of God.

In this important and interesting book the history of ancient America is unfolded, from its first settlement by a colony that came from the Tower of Babel, at the confusion of languages to the beginning of the fifth century of the Christian era. We are informed by these records that America in ancient times has been inhabited by two distinct races of people. The first were called Jaredites and came directly from the Tower of Babel. The second race came directly from the city of Jerusalem, about six hundred years before Christ. They were principally Israelites, of the descendants of Joseph. The Jaredites were destroyed about the time that the Israelites came from Jerusalem, who succeeded them in the inheritance of the country. The principal nation of the second race fell in battle towards the close of the fourth century. The remnant are the Indians that now inhabit this country.

[...]

Respectfully, etc.,

JOSEPH SMITH

Oh yes, and this bit from Joseph Smith's letter is worth a look too:

... the history of ancient America is unfolded, from its first settlement by a colony that came from the Tower of Babel, at the confusion of languages to the beginning of the fifth century of the Christian era.

So the "two distinct races of people" who inhabited America in ancient times were:

(a) The Jaredite colony ("its first settlement" - sorry about that, Clovis Hunters. You're out.)

(b) The second race, from Jerusalem.

And that's it. No "others" at all. Fits the Book of Mormon very well, but not the apologists' story ...

Chap, you just don't understand that Joseph Smith was an Idiot Prophet. God used him as a tool, but he never really understood what he was doing. And God didn't think it was important to prevent Joseph Smith from passing on his own fallible human conjecture about the nature of the Book of Mormon, so Joseph was allowed to print as explanations of Mormon beliefs false things that were just his own mistaken opinion.

Don't you get it?!?!
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen
