For years, the Church has taught that the Lamanites in the Book of Mormon are the primary or principal ancestors of the American Indian.
The Lamanites were descendents of Lehi, who was Hebrew. DNA evidence refutes the Hebrew descention as a primary source.
Therefore, changing the wording in the Book of Mormon from "the Lamanites are the principal ancestors of the American Indian" to "the Lamanites are among the ancestors of the American Indian" is extremely significant.
It changes the entire meaning of the phrase, and directly disputes years of doctrinal teaching throughout the Church.
Edited to add---There is another thread in this forum which debates this issue rather thoroughly:
This is an sincere question, what is the apologist response to his words? For any other theory to work Joseph Smith's words must be voided. Or are they?
The apologetic response I have heard and read is that Joseph Smith had a "superficial understanding" of the Book of Mormon and his personal revelations regarding the Book of Mormon people and history.
Evidently apologists believe Joseph Smith, restorer of the one and only true church, who communed personally with Nephite angels, Jesus Christ, and God himself, got it all wrong but today's apologists have got it figured out correctly. They understand what Joseph Smith did not.

If that is so, then exactly who are the apologists following?

What say the prophet and/or the bretheren?
Insert ironic quote from fellow board member here.

I truly do not know.
I've asked myself this question many times. It seems apologists consider the prophet just a regular old man who shares his opinion and if you want to follow his ideas or advice, fine. If not that is fine too. (I guess most non-believers hold a smiliar view actually)!
Of course the typical believing member has no idea the traditional view is no longer held by apologists, and I think most still believe the prophet is the mouthpiece for Christ.
However this is certainly not the view of apologists.

I do not ever recall hearing a leader address the difficult issues.
History shows whenever they make big changes, they just move forward as if there are no problems, do not address anything that may be troubling, and sooner or later it is forgotten.

After how many years as a follower of Mormonism and how many wasted YEARS of time on these discussion boards and you ask a question like that?
DUH?
Speaking of a nutshell, with that revealing question, that's about the extent of your Mormon knowledge- it would fit in a nutshell.
Because, unlike you, I ask questions for meaningful clarification before I assume anything. That's why. The only thing "revealing" in my question is that I think.
And unlike myself and all other former Mormons on this board, YOU were never a Mormon and will never have the level of understand that we do. We former Mormon do not need "meaningful clarification".. we just get it.
Someone please pass the ketchup to Jersey Girl, it will help kill the taste of FOOT that you just placed into your mouth.
