Oh, Scratch, that alone is worth a sig. line!!

No one from here, or MAD? No one knows who you are. And how have you been "harassed"? Did someone disagree with what you wrote? Did they pelt your house with rocks?

So why wouldn't those people possessing a PhD in Mormon Studies or Bible Studies from BYU be able to gain employment at any university that has a Religious Studies department?

It's odd. Several apologists, notably Juliann, insist that the time for Mormon scholarly studies have finally begun, and Mormon scholars are being given the respect they deserve.

If that's the case, then BYU should be the first to offer a PhD in Mormon Studies, and should certainly offer a PhD program in Biblical Studies. And I'm wondering why they don't.

Wait a sec... Now you are claiming that LDS scholars won't present their arguments to the outside world because of prejudice? Prejudice against what, pray tell? Moreover, I'm not sure how this squares with DCP & et. al.'s claim that secular scholars are totally oblivious to LDS theories and arguments.

You are too funny. Wait a sec yourself. I said they wouldn't be HIRED. You really do have a talent for misreading or mistating. Please stay with what I say if you want to comment on it. Don't make something up.

Hey! Whose thread is this again? Anyways, the point is that LDS scholars do not present their theories in legit academic venues. Perhaps they *would* get "HIRED" if they made an actual effort to legitimize their work

Mister Scratch wrote:The bottom line is this, Charity: if LDS scholars are not going to attempt to share their theories with secular scholars and the rest of the academic world, then LDS scholars have no business characterizing their work as "scholarly" at all.

This is a crock. "Scholarly" is a function of methodology.

Yep. And part of that "methodology" involves presenting one's theories and research to a diverse array of peers. Since all of FARMS work is handled "in house," this aspect of scholarship never happens.

It has nothing to do with who the theory is shared with. If Royal Skousen uses the accepted methods of textual criticism, it doesn't matter whether the object of his study is the Book of Mormon or Pride and Prejudice.

It does matter who sees it if he'd like his theory to be legitimized. If he is too embarrassed to show it to the light of day, then by all means, he can file it away in his desk, or he can submit it to FARMS Review.

Me too, and wondering if this blooming academic Mormon elite exists largely in someone's imagination. ;)
We hate to seem like we don’t trust every nut with a story, but there’s evidence we can point to, and dance while shouting taunting phrases.

See what I mean? Obviously it was a mistake to mention even this small thing.

The strongest reference I had was Tarski's PM. Tarski and I were ideological opponents on FAIR, and he never PMd me, at any time, except this one time. He kept telling you "give it up", because he too could see your false basis for making such judgements. I still don't agree with Tarski's views (although I still consider them), but my respect for him soared after that.

You sound ultra-sensitive to criticism, Scratch. And it proves my point, you can dish it out, personally to other people, in truckloads, but you can't take it. Any slight questioning about yourself unnerves you.

A PM? Wow, Ray---you have got to be kidding me. Are you going to post the PM, or am I going to just have to take your word here, you know, given how little "credibility" you give me. Where did Tarski tell me to "give it up", Ray? Do you have a link? Certainly *I* didn't receive any PMs from him telling me this. I did receive a PM from him on a certain topic, and it was quite the opposite of what you are suggesting here, mate. Gee, I sure do hope you haven't been caught in a lie!

Go ahead and criticize my arguments or my online postings/behavior all you want, Ray. I don't really like the notion of people coming to my home, though. What's wrong with that? I'm pretty sure that you approved of Pahoran's in real life name getting taken off my blog, despite how well-known it is. Or do you think Pahoran should have to post using his real name, since he so often attacks people personally, e.g. by calling them "anti-Mormon scum" and the like?

by the way: Show me where I have "dished it out personally to other people" in a sense that it extends beyond online activity. You won't be able to do it. I don't do anything to anyone else that I wouldn't have them do to me. I have always responded only to online stuff, and that's it. How you can find fault with this practice is beyond me.

Perhaps because there is no one qualified to teach in the program? Or perhaps because a PhD in Mormon Studies would be in conflict with the Upper 15, because they would all know more about Mormons than Mormon leaders do? No more plausible deniability?
