His religious views as they relate to stem cell research, abortion, capital punishment, and perhaps the creationism vs. evolution debate, I think, would be relevant to some. These positions could relate to his religious beliefs. Most Americans don't know much about LDS and are therefore sort of freaked out (gotta say I was too with a few things) when they hear some of the odder parts of the religion. Most people are familiar with mainstream Christianity so there's not such a tendency to delve into it -- for most are already aware of the mainstream Christian ideology.

So a president who may buy into say the bizarre end time ideas presented in The Left Behind Series is quite fine. Maybe he should be asked his view of the Four Horsemen from Revelation and if he believes it literally in the EV fundie way.

So because more people know about a religion it is ok with them is what you are saying. Give Mormonism another 200-300 years and everyone wil just ingore it like they do the odd beliefs Christians have.

I didn't say that! I, personally, think all views of the supernatural (whatever form they appear) are a bit strange. Yet, I recognize that many people live by these beliefs and are decent people. I don't care what religious views people hold, for the most part. I think the media has glommed on to this story because people are interested. It sells -- that's it. Is it fair? Nope. Is it good journalism? Nope. Is it religious bigotry? Yep. Do I understand why Americans are interested in understanding more about LDS beliefs? Yes sirree!

I also think religious views, as they relate to policy decisions, are fair game and perfectly acceptable as newsworthy.

As I said, most people are uncomfortable with learning about LDS beliefs because they're not familiar with them. LDS beliefs are no more wacko than mainstream Christianity, in my view. It's just people are curious and tend to think that their own views (a resurrected Jesus, virgin births, end times, etc..) are perfectly acceptable and have knee jerks to anything outside their norm. It's human nature to not recognize that they hold onto some bizarre beliefs themselves. I don't think it's very rational -- but I understand why it occurs.

And this, my dear BoMonk, is what is so great about America.

You can decide for yourself what is important in the public arena.

You can decide for yourself what is important when it comes to casting your ballot.

Sadly it would appear so. *cough* Bush *cough*

(Actually I'm just responding to this so I can rip into the Left Behind series. [why did I own all of them? I was stupid in my younger years] Fairly crappy writing, way too much use of God as a plot device and plot mover, wooden characters who seem to come from across the whole spectrum for no other reason than for political correctness's sake, and an AntiChrist so unimaginative that the best name he can up think up for his wimpyass totalitarian regime is the "Global Community". Did he get that name from the Wiggles? Talk about corny.)

I found it amusing that any time any of the characters got in the air they were fine. The Global Community doesn't believe in air defense. It's for those wimpy Christians. I do think that the Christians were insipid. I was rooting for the AntiChrist. Shame he lost.

Just a thought. Why don't Romney and Huckabee join forces. The one with the most votes runs for President and the other for Vice President. Then there would be both a Baptist and a Mormon in the White House - either a Mormon President and Baptist VP; or a Baptist President and a Mormon VP!

Sounds like a recipe for armed warfare in the White House!

I doubt his religious beliefs will be as scrutinized as Romney's, since everyone is used to the Baptists. But yes, I believe they should be. I also believe he will get a pass, unfortunately.

Fair enough. by the way, you may said that because mainstream Christian views are more well known and people are more comfortable with them they are not brought into play. My comments was to point to some that are bizarre and illustrate that if Mormon beliefs are fair play so are other beliefs.

Yet, I recognize that many people live by these beliefs and are decent people.

Sure-Baptists and Mormons or Catholics or Jews or whatever.

I don't care what religious views people hold, for the most part. I think the media has glommed on to this story because people are interested. It sells -- that's it.

That is right. Thus my point about Mormonism is fair game for religious bigotry.
