Blue Boutique -- laughing all the way to the bank!

As I was driving to work this morning, I passed my relief society neighbors picketing in front of the future site of the "Blue Boutique," a lingerie store with an adult room in the back. It's been on every newscast, newspaper, editorial commentary over the last week that the forced move up three blocks in Sugarhouse puts the "sex toy store" across from Sugarhouse park and a few blocks away from Highland High School. The rumblings in the church foyer are that it will tempt the kids to sneak a peak at the risque mannequins, and, heaven forbid, might catch sight of a rubber penis if they can pass for 20 years old!

My first thought this morning was you can't buy this sort of advertising! I wouldn't be surprised if one of the owners is disguised and picketing in front of the store just like the Relief Society sisters are!

I remember a few years ago when "Bikini Cuts" opened up in Sandy. The same thing happened...a meeting in the church -- I mean "library" -- was organized where they tried to boycott the stores around Bikini cuts. Somehow they thought that would encourage the building owner to kick them out. Go figure.

Simply out of rebellion, I went to get a haircut. There were these scantilly dressed gals, in a tropical setting with the smell of coconut in the air, doing a HUGE volume of business. I got an overpriced haircut with a cheap hand massage...but I felt good about supporting the "victims."

After the hullaballou died off, they are just another business struggling to make a buck in Sandy.

I have to wonder...don't these people realize that the protesting they do just gives free advertising to the businesses they are trying to shut down?

OK, for all you puritans out there, what the hell is wrong with selling goods that help people enjoy sex? Sex is a big part of life, and why shouldn't it be more fun? If I want to buy something to make my sex life more enjoyable, fun, etc., (and let's assume I only do it with my wife), why is it anyone's concern? I just don't get this obsession with sex by the religious right.

Yep, very counter-productive. It reminds of all the controversy surrounding the movie The Last Temptation of Christ. All these religious types wanted everyone to avoid it, and all it did was make more people see it than it deserved (it came on the movie channel about a year later - I watched about 10 minutes of it before turning it off out of shear indifference).

When The Passion of the Christ came out, I was absolutely sure Mel Gibson learned from the Last Temptation fiasco and drummed up his own controversy just to sell more tickets. I mean, why not? That's just good marketing.

That's one thing I never could figure out--why the protesters didn't realize all the free publicity they were giving their "victims."

Besides, does picketing ever work anyway?

Nobody here is really bothered about sex stores. The church isn't really interested here. I have been in one and I was shocked. I never went back in. You only have to be 18 here to go in. I liked the first side where all the kinky outfits and uderwear and games were but in the back geez ohh It was pure porn. One thing that stuck with me was this giant hand like the size of my head. It was in a clenched fist sort of thing and woman find that apealing. I would die if someone came towards me with that thing. I am dying at the idea of it. I need to go repent I have bad images in my mind now. There vere whips and things and dvd's. It was like a whorematers house. Whatever one of them is. I just thought it sounded rather appropriate. It was not a nice experience at all. Someone really should have covered my innocent eyes.
