My theory is that Mormons are far more suceptible to the latest psychology fads, and this is the reason so many of them embrace the diagnosis of "depression." Since comparatively few Mormons commit suicide, I would guess that a lot fewer of them are "depressed" than the numbers would indicate. So much about the diagnosis of depression is subjective judgment.

Drop the condescending feminist junk.

Let's see, why would I think you were meaning to smear the Church?

1. This is a Mormon dicussion webiste, presumably all items brought up here are relevant to the Church.
2. Utah is recognized as being predominantly LDS.
3. Any negative item brought up under these circumstances is assumed to refer back to the Church.

Don't give me that wide eyed innocent look. We all know what you are saying.

Right on. He is making Mormons look like they have something to do with what is happening in Utah, as opposed to the Great Salt Lake or the Wasatch Mountains.

Dunno. It seems a bummer to me. I just get depressed thinking all that happy face is just a facade. Of course, I feel better when I realize I have a lot of company for my depression.

I actually agree that the ex-Mormons are among the depressed. I think multi-generational Mormons and even converts probably rank higher for such qualities as suggestibility. These people are probably more likely to embrace faddish diagnoses because they come to identify with the experience of those who are supposedly ill with the latest thing.

The real reason for any high suicide rate in Utah is that it is full of white people. They have over twice the suicide rate of racial minorities.

If there were more black people in Utah the rate would be lower. Unfortunately for the Utah the Mormons didn't bring slavery or any sizeable black population West. Now they have been cursed with high suicide rates. BAD Mormons.

My theory is that Mormons are suspicious of psychology. Or maybe it is just those of us who have studied it who are suspicious.

One of the few times I agree with Charity -- at least about those of us who have studied it. Mental disease is so subjective. And some of the most wacked out people I know are PhD psychologists! I dated this borderline doc for a minute...nothing worse than being analyzed while you're making the moves on a borderline shrink!

You are more wacky than me - said the patient of the crazyhouse to the supervisor professors. (from one of my favourite books - as far as I know it is not available outside of Hungary)
- Whenever a poet or preacher, chief or wizard spouts gibberish, the human race spends centuries deciphering the message. - Umberto Eco
- To assert that the earth revolves around the sun is as erroneous as to claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin. - Cardinal Bellarmine at the trial of Galilei

I was simply trying to be charitable, darlin'. You need to relax a little more.

That's drop the condescending misogynist junk, charity.

Probably just a slip of the keyboard; I'm sure charity knows the difference ; )
