Jesus as a functionary, not as a "Christ"

Post by _Mercury »

I am sure the faithful will cry foul on this one. To them, I ask you reexamine the way you are asked to perceive Jesus.

Is Jesus just another functionary in Mormon theology? A character that is more of a stand-in for Elohim?

For me it always struck me as odd that Joseph Smith got more play than Jesus Christ when speaking of influential individuals who have "saved" humanity.

Yes, the church is named Jesus Christ, but the main focus of the first discussion is...SURPRISE!!! Joseph Smith!

The first discussion was in six parts while I was a missionary:

1- Kolob dwelling super god appoints Prophets, theres some guy named Jesus too
2- what IS a PROPHET? (answer=its a lot like Joe)
3- Gag reflex inducing first vision, Jesus and Elohim are graced with the presence of Joe
4- Joe is superman, translates Book of Mormon
5- Book of Mormon is gods word, yadayada
6- Pray about it and if you have gas then that's actually the spirit witnessing that Joe is superman

The missionary discussions talk of Joe with the supporting role of Christ. For a "christian" church this certainly smacks of deferring the role of VIP from Jesus onto Joe.

Mormonism is a personality cult, plain and simple. Joseph Smith is the center of Mormonism, not Jesus. Hell...not even "God the father" is given much. But this is the nature of the ever evolving cult. These days just replace Jesus with Gordy Hinckster and the process continues.

I think you were out at the same time as me. It was more like:

1. God
2. Jesus
3. Prophets in general
4. Experience of Joseph Smith
5. Book of Mormon.
6. Prayer.

Then it follows that the second discussion is focussed on Christ. We don't get back to Joseph Smith until the 3rd discussion (and that's a brief review) before teaching about the Church organization. Jesus got earlier billing on both.

This is your first big error. You may have read D&C 135: 3 "Joseph Smith, the Prophet and Seer of the Lord, has done more, save Jesus only, for the salvation of men in this world, than any other man that ever lived in it." Please note the phrase I bolded.

The main focus is God's continuing revelation to mankind. From your misreading it seems you never went to Primary, or seminary, or attended Sunday School or even read JSH.

You were a miserable missionary, if this is what you taught.

Are you sure you were a returned missionary? This sounds more like it was written by a middle school twit?

Let's just say, for the purpose of this discussion, you are an adult. Oh, well. . . .no, that is too much of a stretch.

Moses 1:19

And now, when Moses had said these words, Satan cried with a loud voice, and ranted upon the earth, and commanded, saying: I am the Only Begotten, worship me.

Since I don't know anyone who does worship Joseph Smith in the LDS Church you really should aim higher. Since you seem to think everyone did, I can only assume that you did.
