Girls Christmas Essay Rejected Because She Wasn't Mormon

Post by _Infymus »

Michelle Bliss was thrilled Monday when she received a call telling her that her daughter's essay about a true Christmas story had been selected to run in a supplement to the Deseret Morning News.

Her elation was short-lived, however. The woman asked whether she was Mormon. When she replied that she was not, the woman apologized and said they were only running essays on Mormon families.

Her daughter, seventh-grader Georgia Clyde, was one of several students whose class essays were sent to the paper by Olympus Junior High School English teacher Jennifer Allred for consideration in its "Christmas I Remember Best" contest.

Pretty typical for the Lard's newspaper. Brigham would be proud.

This is disappointing. It is similar to treatment some Mormon Kids have gotten in big Bible belt communities. Mormons should not be doing this type of stuff.

I agree that Mormons should not be doing this kind of thing. Also, I live in the Bible belt, and my children have basically grown up here. They have not received any type of ill treatment from Evangelical Christians.

When my family and I lived in Utah, I was disgusted with the bigotry that some Church members seemed to exhibit toward non-members. It was terrible.

There was a very nice family that moved in next door to us that were Catholic. I was horrified to learn that before they bought the house next to us, they had actually been turned down when they tried to rent an apartment. The landlord actually told them that they were turned down because they were not Mormon. I think the family was pursuing the case with an attorney because it was out and out discrimination.

I just don't understand people sometimes.

When I bought and moved into my first house in 1988, I was inactive. One day I was standing inside my carport when a prominent Mormon mother and two children were walking by on Sunday. The mother said to her children, "Don't even look at that house."

I walked out of the shadow and just glared at her.

Fast forward twenty years. Here I am on the MD boards being accused of being a crappy member who was totally at fault for whatever doctrine I didn't "understand", or for not realizing the "Truth" in what I was being taught was wrong.

I see no difference.

I suppose spiritual things can only happen to LDS. When the little girl prayed that her baby brother wouldn't die, perhaps that wasn't Mormon enough for the editors at the Church News.

Silly attitude, really, especially when you consider that the Church News goes along with the weekend DesNews to all subscribers in Utah, not just the LDS ones.

Wouldn't want to mix the heathens in with the righteous!

I think if you look at the story as well you'll find the following statement would have caused the story to be rejected, even if she was Mormon:

My mom had been a single mother of two for just about six years, but a little over two years ago the most amazing thing happened to our little family.

Single mothers are an abomination to the church.

No wonder my paternal grandma is so weird.

Am I the only one who thinks I should hear the DN's side of the story too? Some Mormons certainly are prejudiced little jerks, but I was taught that miracles happen to other people of other faiths too. In fact it seems to me that Mormonism is the very thing that taught me that such behavior as is alleged to have happened here is wrong.

Yeah sure. Are you forgetting that it would have been published in the Church News had she been Mormon? Single Moms happen.

Once again, the Tribune proves it is the truer newspaper by publishing the girl's story.
