BYU Porn Study
BYU has published a study of pornography acceptance among college students.
http://news.BYU.edu/archive07-Dec-porn.aspx
Some findings:
48 percent of male students reported viewing pornography at least weekly.
86 percent of male students had viewed pornography in the last year.
1 in 5 male students view pornography daily or nearly every day.
I'm not a huge fan of porn, but it seems to me that its prevalence belies the notion that pornography is this addictive scourge that is turning men into deviants and rapists.

I'll bet the female stats on viewing porn would be higher if you included romance novels. ;)
That's our little soft porn secret. LOL

Not the sweet romance novel genre that I write. No sex, on or off screen. Hearts can pound, but there is not even heavy breathing.

I'm naughtier than you are. My romance stories would easily be considered soft porn.

A few thoughts:
1. How did they define porn? At BYU, classical statues of ancient art are considering pornographic.
2. Was BYU one of the schools? See above comment.
3. No wonder the 15 speak about this so often in conference. Perhaps they should target their remarks a bit more, and insert a question about viewing porn into the TRI.

I'm guessing as a survey they let the subject define porn. Porn is infesting the Church. I'm guessing at least 33-50% of the male members of the Church have some problem with this.....possibly even more. It doesn't necessarily turn you into a rapist or deviant but we want the whole Holy Ghost thing to keep working.

Then again, not everyone who smokes gets lung cancer.
Scratch brings up an interesting point.

This was research taken from "six schools across the country", not just BYU. Without knowing if all the six schools were Mormon, limited conclusions can be drawn. Does anyone have more information?
To draw a correlation to the higher rape rates, it would have to be shown that Utahns (or Mormons, extrapolating possibly from a Mormon school survey) have higher rates of porn watching than others in states with less rape. I seriously doubt that can be shown. Porn is popular everywhere.

We hate to seem like we don’t trust every nut with a story, but there’s evidence we can point to, and dance while shouting taunting phrases.
