Oh, oh I get that, and normally I'd agree. The thing is, it's worth it for Scratch to take the suspicion rather than vindicate himself for the sake of not scaring off "informants", many who would be less likely to PM scratch if they know that others can and might be watching in the future. Journalists protect their informants, not just out of integrity, but their own livelihood.

For Ray, there's nothing to lose either way. Let's say, hypothetically, I edited a PM and FAIR did not yet have the ability to read PM's. Because the board is pro-Mormon, it would be in my interest to run with it. The board would be inclined to protect the suspected apologist, meaning they'd find some reason not to go through with looking and I'd be banking on that. On the off-chance, they might "peak ahead" before deciding or outright cover it up, but it wouldn't matter if they did those things as a vindication of the apologist would just make the skeptics consider foul play. If Shades or Keene came back and vindicated Scratch, would that settle the matter without a doubt in DCP's mind?

I'm not blaming DCP for that, that's just the way it is when you have two warring communities which are highly suspicious of each others integrity.
