Why? Did Romney defer military service? Why should he reconcile alleged unchristian doctrines with his statement that he is a Christian.

Mormons are Christians merc. THey may be heretical to orthodox Christians but they are Christians. And the rest of Christianity is apostate to Mormon Christianity. You are beating a hollow drum here.

One can not seriously believe the Mormon religion in its entirety is christian. Historically they have distanced themselves from the title Christian or have been so wishywashy about that designation to make the label so watered down it becomes useless.

THis is simply not correct and I doubt you could prove it. Historically they have claimed to be the Church of Christ and others apostate. 19th century rhetoric was strong against the Christianity of that day but that was in no way a distancing from Chrisitianity.

Mormons are christian the same way Moonies could be considered christian.

Moonies believe Jesus was divine, but that he failed in his main purpose, to restore the pure Family, If I recall correctly, and The Father (ie, Rev Moon) is here to fulfill what Jesus could not.

by the way, I agree with Jason. Yes, Mormonism is not mainstream christianity and teaches concepts mainstream christianity views as heresy, but if the primary definition of a christian is to "accept Jesus as one's savior", ie, to believe that the act of atonement in someway absolves human beings of sin and enables them to return to God, then there is no doubt Mormons are christians.

I understand the antipathy that exists between Mormonism and mainstream christianity, and there is no doubt the early leaders of the LDS church encouraged and exacerbated that antipathy, but that does not mean Mormons cannot logically be called Christians.

Standard stuff. Godhead vs Trinity, the Book of Mormon vs the Bible, Nicene...its a big list.

No there is not. What other church equivalent to Mormonism tells the congregaton where they have to attend. It is this economic segregation that sickens me, not the racist segregation I experienced even last week at the ward christmas party.
