can't
Can someone tell me why it is impossible to use the word "can't" in this forum? When I use it, it always ends up posted as "can't". When I return to edit it, it goes back to "can't". Is there something I can turn off so that I can use the word without the system turning it into the contraction of "cannot"?

I can't help you...
I'm afraid that the c-a-n-t of this board militates against certain otherwise perfectly-acceptable homonymic expressions.

It's probably Shades the "grammatical Nazi" at work. (Just joking, Shades.) For example, write naïve, and it comes up as
naïve
Try n-a-i-v-e. (I wrote the "i" in lower case, but it appeared in upper case, probably because of the absent inflection)

Test: can't
You're right, too. But you're isn't corrected.
It's a free speech board, but it's not a free-spelling board, not entirely anyway. Shades must have "pet spelling annoyances".

That's because you're the only person who ever uses the word c-a-n-t (the noun). Lots of people are too lazy to insert an apostrophe into the contraction of "cannot," so it was a question of pleasing the one vs. pleasing the many. The greatest good for the greatest number, if you will.
Forgive me, but I think it's well worth the tradeoff of having your precious c-a-n-t appear incorrectly on those rare occasions when you use it rather than be driven completely bats*** insane by the seeing the word "can't" without an apostrophe on an hourly basis.

Nope. You're stuck. Pick another word.

I tend to use the wrong spelling of words. I used to just type out t-h-r-u for lack of desire to spell through properly.
Shade fixed it somehow. Now whenever I spell it improperly, its automaticly spelled through.
