Re: Politics mixed with religion in Utah

Post by _Tidejwe »

Unfortunately Utah has a history of mixing religion with politics and will likely continue to do so. One of the most recent examples being the whole Gay marriage amendment announcement that was read in sacrament meeting. Really pissed me off To be honest. So much for political neutrality and the church not being used for political discussions, meetings, etc.

One of my all time FAVORITE examples come from Brigham Young though.

Brigham Young tells the Legislature in Utah on Jan 23, 1852 to legalize slavery because "we must believe in slavery" because God meant it to be so.

I enjoy confronting TBM's about this incident and asking them: Didn't that come from a prophet of God? Didn't he TELL those people that we MUST believe in slavery? Why aren't we still fighting for the right to hold slaves like Brigham did and told us to do? I mean, if a prophet of God says we must believe in slavery, then it must be from God right?

Similarly, there is the case of Jane Manning...Joseph Smith Offered to adopt Jane, but she turned him down at the time. Many years after Joseph's death, Jane decided she wanted to be sealed to Joseph as his adopted daughter as he'd offered. Wilford Woodruff wouldn't allow it, but offered to seal her to Joseph as his servant [slave] for eternity. I wonder why they won't let people seal themselves to me as my servant for all eternity. Anyway, slavery is obviously an eternal Godly principle as demonstrated by Brigham Young trying to put his religious views into the legislature.

Your example is quite interesting though Mercury. I suppose it is inferred that they didn't have any non-LDS aids, staff, etc? Too bad it was so long ago now or I bet someone could have fun with that...

When they discuss matters involving state business.

So when they go out to eat after work and discuss it it's a formal meeting. I went out to eat with a guy who works for the Romney campaign and we discussed it in depth. Same with a City Council member. Forrmal business?

Your main problem in discussion is that you believe Feigned naïveté is a positive and constructive tactic.

You don't think I'm really naïve? Mercury, that might be the first nice thing you've ever said to me.

Don't get used to it.

Lost in time
And lost in space...and meaning

Here I was thinking we were going to hug and become friends.

Indeed. Why is the Governor of Utah holding morning meetings called "Early Morning Seminary" in his workplace in the first place?

I'm sure the guy you went out with wrote off the dinner as a business expense. ;)

LOL! The guy was definitely working for a politician, in that case! :)

He probably still wrote it off.

We're also friends. I owed him dinner ;)

I'm not going to say whether I wrote it off.

Hopefully, you did! :)

After all, you were discussing business....whether it was his business or yours is immaterial. LOL
