I'm amazed they haven't axed hymn #51: "Sons of Michael He Approaches."

Current Version:

Sons of Michael, he approaches! Rise, the ancient father greet.
Bow, ye thousands, low before him; Minister before his feet.

Original Version:

Sons of Michael, he approaches! Rise; the Eternal Father greet

Even though it's been sanitized, it's still a clear throwback to the Adam-God doctrine. I suspect it will be MIA in the next hymnal.

Wow! That's another obscure hymn I've never even heard of! And I've been both a Ward choir director and chorister on multiple occasions. How inept is that? LOL

I'm curious as to when we will have a new hymnal and a new primary music book, actually. We could use both.

Bah. I think they should bring back the old one where "The Spirit of God (Like a Fire is Burning) is #213 instead of #2. Anyone still have one of those?

I do! :)

The old hymnal is much easier to play out of. The new hymnal transposed a lot of the keys so it would be easier for congregations to sing.

I prefer the old arrangements to many of the hymns.

I enjoy a lot of the new hymns, too, though.

I'm with you liz. The change in 'Joy to the World' drove me nuts. As a child I would always sing the correct version as loudly as possible. I once asked my grandmother why they sang "Saints and angels" and she said, "well, they think everything's about them, I guess..."

Since we just finished a Christmas season, I thought I would mention this. Why do Mormons feel the need to change the words to standard Christmas carols? This has always bugged me. What's wrong with "heaven and nature sing"? Why the need to change it to "saints and angels"?

Also...why did the MoTab have to change the words to "Battle Hymn of the Republic"?

"Let us die to make men free" was written for a reason. It's a battle hymn!

A little fyi about the MoTab. I sang with the choir for a short time in the late 70s/early 80s. The director at the time was Jay Welch -- who was also the dean of the music dept at the University of Utah. He was very good, and well liked. He also LOVED the song "Ave Maria." For some reason (smile...), some didn't want that song to be performed by the choir, and as he was so respected, didn't want the black eye of releasing him because of his "liberal" ways.

Thus, the 20 year rule was instituded...choir members can only stay for 20 years. Coincidently, Jay was at his 20 years.

So he, and many of us, left the choir and went with Jay to start his own...and guess what was one of the first songs we sang?

Ave Maria.

And now you know..."the rest of the story...."

That is so cool that you had the opportunity to sing with both the MoTab and this other group! :)

I was in the BYU Concert Choir when Mack Wilberg directed it. Now that he is the Assistant Conductor for the MoTab, I must say, that he has done a lot of things to improve the overall sound of the group. It is a much brighter sound. I can always tell when he is conducing, and the pieces that he has worked with the group on.

He was one of the few conductors at BYU I really enjoyed working with. He has a lot of knowledge about the voice, and is not afraid of utilizing solo singers in his choirs. He is also a really nice person. His wife is great, too.
