Could it have to do with the priesthood correlation committee? I don't remember much about what occurred with this, but do remember that when I was at BYU in the early eighties, members were told we could not have informal meetings on our own (like some sisters were meeting informally for support, or meeting for scripture study). I never understood why they did this, but in retrospect, it seems part of the desire to control what is discussed. And was the church always so strict in regards to pushing teachers to teach straight out of the manual?

I remember this as well.

A few stay at home moms in my neighborhood were meeting once a week for an hour to study scriptures together and we were counseled by our ward leaders (under direction of higher ups), to stop our meetings. I was a faithful and believing member at the time and quickly obeyed. :-)

This also happened in our ward. Several people would meet at different houses each week and read and discuss scriptures. The SP through the Bishop but a stop to it. It caused some debate. The study group was strictly scripture based. We never did get a clear answer to why the brethren wanted it stopped.
