Hi Mary,
I’ve never found much of a problem with “conversing with non-Mormons.” I don’t know if others find it to be a problem, but I don’t. I might be slightly different though, given that two of my closest friends are former-Mormons, and of the other friends I have; only one is LDS.
I can see how there could potentially be a difficulty. Mormonism in many ways is a culture as much as a religion. So many facets of life tie into the religion. There is church, church callings, church news, conference talks, who is getting married, etc., etc. It may be difficult for some to find conversation topics beyond “Mormonism” when being Mormon is so much more than simply being Protestant, or Catholic. In many ways, I think that the only comparably religion (in regards to cultural identity being tied to religious identity) would be Judaism.
