I'd say it's a fair trade off for more even-handed moderation and lack of censorship.

Here's what happens when you let people have smilies.
First, they start out innocent enough. Maybe just a simple yellow face with a line. Then, before you know it, they've gone to hell in a handbasket, fully addicted to animated crack.

Some of the mobiles that hung over cribs had smiley faces. That could have some residual effect. Has Shades displayed any unusual traits or twitches besides this aversion to smilies?
