I don't get why the no Smilies. Are they frowned on all of the time? I think they are a good thing. They show emotion, add interest and almost give the posts 'sound'. When you see a smilie, you almost hear a voice.

No it's not. Playful banter = yes, Happy Face Hell = no.

I think they're the insignia of non-seriousness. Whenever I see them I think someone's using degraded short-cuts for complex expression. I've always assumed that's why they're so popular over there (imagine "appropriate" smilie here if you must).
