I voted no and if he hadn't kept waiving it in my face, I wouldn't have grabbed it.

Then that little bastard got what was coming to him.

Truth Dancer, you know I love you, but you do realize that you're the #1 offender when it comes to smilie overuse, right?

Simple:
  • They make the board look juvenile.
  • They make the board look unprofessional.
  • They make the board look like a lazy third-grader's scrapbooking project.
  • People use them as a crutch to avoid having to use the language effectively.

If you don't believe me, see Blixa's comments.

Are you saying these are bad things?

So, are we in trouble if we use an occasional emoticon like this?

So, I was looking for some smilies to download, and decided against it. They just don't thrill me that much--BUT--I couldn't believe some of the naughty smilies I found, lol!

They looked like two Skittles going at it! I like Skittles, but I don't really want to see them having sex. They can reproduce in the privacy of the bag, as far as I'm concerned.

Of course, the Sexy Skittles reminded of Marcy Playground's fantastic song, Sex and Candy. Mmmmm...

As Nehor pointed out, this is bad...how? We pride ourselves on being juvenile. It's part of our charm. ;)

Shades wrote:They make the board look unprofessional.

And we're trying to look "professional"...why? Again, what are the merits of professionalism? Also, there are plenty of professional message boards that utilize smileys. Besides, I want to post here to get AWAY from my professional life.

I disagree. I don't think that smileys are used as anymore of a crutch than other "web" abbreviations such as "LOL", "ROTFL", etc. Actually, there are times when smileys can communicate the intention of what is being said more effectively. One of the disadvantages to communicating on a message board is that you CANNOT see body language, eye contact, etc. Smileys can help put some of those types of intangibles on a more even playing field.
