The Christian thing to do would have been to accede to their requests if it would have been nothing more than a major inconvenience to you.

The Christian thing for the other family to have done would have been not to make the request and just use a residence for this.

These kind of conflicts are antithetical to the true Christian religion and manifest a spirit of unbelief. But, I probably would have done what you did.

I remember one of the cultures in an old sci-fi show threw a huge party at funerals and made weddings as dull and morbid as possible so things could only get better. I think there might be wisdom in this....

By the kind of standard you're suggesting, there are precious few "Christians" out there, a miniscule share of those who claim the title. Christians do all kinds of s*** and have been doing it for centuries.

Back to topic, it was a dinner for crimenies sakes, not a funeral. Use the house of a family member or a ward member, or go to the Chuck-A-Rama. It's completely unreasonable to ask a family to change wedding plans at the last minute for a funeral dinner, and it was completely unreasonable to even ask.

Plus, it's a funeral dinner for, essentially, an unborn child (if I remember correctly). I'm sorry, but from where I sit, and not to be cruel, that is a lower priority than a funeral for, say, a child who died tragically early in life.

No, I don't. The CHI stays in the bishop's or clerk's office. But any member can go sit in the clerk's office and read anything they want. You just can't take it home with your.

And Liz, you are right. The funeral is one thing. The dinner another. I just changed side.

But I have a CHI and there is nothing in there on this.

I honestly don't see why she had a problem with using the room, but still allowing you to decorate around them.

I'm sure the funeral attendees would have been more than understanding, and most likely grateful for a place to eat.

I don't dispute this, but the wide (and I mean WIDE) variation in how they answer this question makes the question itself rather trite and meaningless as some kind of general standard of behavior.
