Just for the record, I haven't voted at all because I know that Big Daddy won't let us have them anyway. One reason that I wouldn't like smilies installed on the board is because the sight of them becomes predictable and tiresome. I much prefer the occasional hit and run imported smilie.

Actually, there are times when smileys can communicate the intention of what is being said more effectively. One of the disadvantages to communicating on a message board is that you CANNOT see body language, eye contact, etc. Smileys can help put some of those types of intangibles on a more even playing field.

But I'm happy to report that everyone's perseverance paid off. I went ahead and installed smilies. Here's how to make them appear:

Second, the use of :-) and :-( looks FAR more juvenile and unprofessional than real smilies.

Third, I have seen MANY a conversation where I thought I was being very clear in my sarcasm, but it turns out I wasn't. A smilie would have prevented a small war.

One thing that I find intrusive (and I just did it here) are the HUGE images that some people post in their posts. I don't mind it at all when it's presenting something useful to the topic (KG's images for Book of Abraham for example) but some of the rest of it just gets to me. I think there is a way to satisfy the smiley thing but I'm not going to tell!
