Tip: There is a checkbox at the bottom of the message box that says "Disable Smilies in this post". Make sure that is unchecked.

You can go to your profile and set it to always allow smilies and this checkbox will be off by default.

Crap! I am such a flip flopper. Now that I see our options and they've been enabled I'm not liking them so much.....
