Unless it's not an error?

If it wasn't an error, it begs the question of why it was changed in 1837.

However, I think more can be made of an analysis of the episode and surrounding text, though, which would help explain the error, taking a look back at chapter 8 and ahead to chapter 28.

What is interesting is the abrupt insertion of the Zeniff flashback surrounding the translation events. I'll work on a coherent post and get back to you.

I'm guessing it was changed because some Apostle saw it as an error and the Brethren had had far less time to analyze the Book so they just changed it. I think the same thing happened with the Jaredite barges' ventilation systems.

I think it was seen as an error because in chapter 28 it is Mosiah who translates the plates, though Ammon and Moroni (well after the fact) mentioned King Benjamin as "having the gift" and "keeping the plates" in the 1830 version.

90% of the LDS church members did never read the book.
This is my (nonscientific) data from Hungary. If we include US/Utah, the percentage may reach the 75%.

Maybe it was changed so that people wouldn't have anything to say about the church.

Sorry I mean, [sheesht... The alarm just went off, then stopped. I didn't want to go out in my PJ's so I just checked it wasn't our place and it stopped. I wouldn't have gone out. I think I am the only person in. I am making toast and beans.] I mean so people wouldn't have reason to turn people against church. in my opinion, believe what you like, it doesn't really matter.

Exactly, that's why the white guys in the Book of Mormon are good and the dark skin guys are bad.

That's why all the evil people like Laman, Lemuel, King Noah etc all had black hair & beards and Nephi and the righteous was blond/white haired and delightsome...

..in the Dramatized Scriptures.

(the evil people always looked so angry and sinister too - not like all the bad people I know today)

It couldn't be a group effort?
