Of course then you'd have to assume that you actually knew the truth, that you were filled in on all of the details and didn't do this with a group think of trying to fit in the pieces. The truth as some have ascribed isn't quite the same as the "truth" I know.

Then it's not truth.

I suggest we stick to the issues and leave the personal bits out of the discussion.

I agree!

Back to the topic: Why did you assume that the "truth" can not be gossip? Let's say Billy Bob slept with his gf (they're both active) and someone tattled on them. Then that gets passed about and about and about -- oh the HORROR! Is it the truth? Yep. So? Is that still not gossip?

Interesting that LDS may have a different take on gossip, then what I have...

How can it be gossip if it's the truth? One of the things that keeps people from doing what Billy Bob and his girlfriend did is that the truth may come out, and how embarrassing is that!

Joseph didn't destroy the printing press because of gossip. Joseph destroyed the printing press to keep the truth from coming out.

The way to avoid gossip is to not do anything you wouldn't want the rest of the world to know about. Simple.

Ahhh... I see. It IS a way to keep everyone in line. That's what I thought! What a great control mechanism! How strange....

Did you see Gad's post about Judas? I think it's fitting, no?

Ah, and telling the truth in order to embarrass someone is acceptable by LDS standards too.

Wow! I'm gaining so much insight in this thread! :)

Don't be laying my definitions on the church. I'm not their spokesperson.

You're right. I'll restate:

Harmony thinks telling the truth in order to embarrass someone is acceptable by her "standards".

Wow! I'm gaining so much insight in this thread! :)

Better? That work?

Harmony thinks that if you do something that is embarrassing, don't be surprised if someone shares the news.

Gossip is when someone tells something that is not the truth.

Personally I think confession to a bishop is a big part of the control system you're thinking about, Mon.

Ah! Good point. Of course what if one is not embarrassed by their actions? Yet, others judges their actions harshly (by their own standards) and desires to attempt to embarrass them? Let's even say that those that are attempting to embarrass have completely different standards than the one they're outing? W Attempting to press some moral agenda onto others? Deviance from "our" norms needs to be talked about and those that deviate must be shamed? Is that it?

Gossip can be the truth. Let's get a better definition, shall we? Yes, lets!

Gossip:

1. Rumor or talk of a personal, sensational, or intimate nature.
2. A person who habitually spreads intimate or private rumors or facts.

Uhoh! Looks like I was right. I love it when the stupid poster is right every once in a while. It is sooo gratifying. :)

Yes, I would imagine that having to confess intimate things often certainly is very controlling. I wonder if that creates the mentality that nothing is really "personal" -- that anything that fits outside the norms dictated must be "outed" in some manner?
