Do they know it's not true?

Post by _Runtu »

On another thread, Inconceivable said that he assumes President Hinckley knew what the rest of us know about the church, its history, and its origins. By extension, then, he assumes that President Hinckley must have known it was not true but was insincerely lying to the membership about the church.

I suspect that church leaders are like every other church member: they have had spiritual experiences that they believe confirm the truthfulness of the church and its teachings, but they don't really "know" any more than anyone else. As for their knowledge of the problematic, I think Steve Benson's interview with Oaks and Maxwell shows that the higher-ups are not particularly well-versed in these issues.

What makes you guys think they're insincere in their professions of faith?

And, yes, charity, I recognize the slim possibility that the church is exactly what it says it is.

Actually, I think most of them are believers. I think there are a few who are not as pure as they'd like us to believe.

From some of the interviews on Larry King and some other things that GBH said, I'm of the opinion that the details of Church doctrine where not something he focused on. Much of his effort went toward improving the PR of the church. I don't know what this means with regards to his belief.

Think about it.

LDS Inc is the largest employer in the state of Utah.

72% of the populations is LDS(source).

They are at the beginning of a massive face lift for the capitol city of the state.

The economy of the state of Utah rests on the LDS church.

Do these men want to go down in history as the one who imploded Utah and laid to waste millions of lives?

I pity them, I really do.

I'm of the opinion that he knew it was bunk. Just look at the dodgy replies he gave to Time Magazine, the San Francisco Tribune, and Larry King: A testimony of the doctrine is something he obviously ain't got.

And I'm of the opinion that Slim Shady doesn't have the slightest idea, regarding the Church, what is bunk and what isn't. Not the slightest.

but, let's pretend...

I'm sure they all believe they have seen Jesus, if even in a dream.

But, then again, Joseph Smith had some very smart people fooled that he was what he claimed. Being nice and soft spoken doesn't necessarily translate into honest and upfront.

I often wonder if outside leaders of the government have told them to not call their own bluff for fear of what it could do to not just the paltry economy of Utah but other states..

I agree with Shades on how dodgie Hinckley was with his public answers. PR spin doc CEO type perhaps, but not a prophet like those before him.

Just as I've given you no evidence that I've ever been a Mormon, right??

You sure have some strict standards, Cogs.
