How did they get to be where they are now?
I know who the 12 are, but how did they get to where they are?
For example, someone said Packer was a CES teacher when he was called. So... who did he know? What made him stand out from the crowd? Who is he related to?
Who is related to who? Who knew who, before they were called?
Perhaps this is too big a question.

Its a good old boys club. Your family, who you do business with and your willingness to lie by omission factor into climbing the ladder. My experience with the Mormon elite has taught me this. They are showmen, modern PT Barnums and nothing more

Packer was one of Harold B. Lee's proteges. He was in charge of seminaries and institutes before being named an apostle.
Russell Nelson was President Kimball's physician.
Joseph B. Wirthlin is GBH's cousin (the B in both names standing for Bitner).
Henry Eyring is the son of U of U grad school dean Henry Eyring, and is the nephew of Camilla Kimball.
Robert D. Hales was CEO of Chesebrough-Pond.
M. Russell Ballard is grandson of Hyrum M. Smith and Melvin J. Ballard, both apostles.
Bednar, Holland, and Oaks were BYU and BYU-I presidents.
Quentin Cook is a descendant of Heber C. Kimball and an attorney/hospital administrator.
Monson was general manager of Deseret Press.

Geez, I really hate it when Merc is right: it really is who you know and who you're related to.
Gosh, that's so depressing.

Wasn’t it J. Golden Kimball that said something about the ways that someone is called… there is relation and revelation. The former sometimes Trump's the latter.

Not at all. All of this information (who is related to who) is found in D. Michael Quinn's The Mormon Hierarchy: Extensions of Power.

You left out Elder Uchtdorf. Care to explain him?
Edited to add: You may look at this as the world does, and think this means that these are the way people are graded--ex number of points if you are an apostles, 1 less point if you are a seventy, one less if you are a regional rep, on down to the lowly member who gets the fewest number of points. That isn't God's system. The faithful member without a calling in the Church may still inherit all the God has, as well as the prophet may. We respect our leaders. We respect every one of our brothers and sisters.

Indeed. One. Out of twelve. How sad. Good grief.
