They should rename the conference center

Post by _Runtu »

I think it would be a fitting tribute to call it the Gordon B. Hinckley Conference Center. After all, it was done during his administration, and the podium is from a tree in his yard.

And I'm being totally serious.

Doesn't he already have a building named after him?

EDIT: From Wikipedia: "On 23 June 2006—his 96th birthday—Hinckley participated in a groundbreaking ceremony at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah for a new building that was to be named in his honor. The building was named the "Gordon B. Hinckley Alumni and Visitors Center" and was completed and dedicated on Hinckley's 97th birthday.[16]"

That one was personally paid for by a bunch of rich Mormons.

The Mega'nacle cost $300 MILLION and was paid for by the tithe payers, out of the general tithing fund.

The sad reality is that the Mega'nacle sits empty as much if not more than most of the Mc'Temples he had built.

BYU has tons of buildings named after Church leaders. Its like walking into a field of monuments for themselves.

I still remember hearing a little blip on NPR when this was dedicated. At the dedication, Pres. Hinckley said: "This is a very large building to carry the name of a small man."

I was thinking about this last week when we were up seeing the new renovated capitol building. The Conference Center sits quiet, and the exterior stairs that lead to the top are all gated. I do know they have a few events there, but it really is a vacant building most of the time.

Was the renovated capitol building dedicated by Pres Hinckley?

Yes they should, Runtu.

But perhaps when Jesus returns He will rename it. Perhaps as a memorial to all his children that returned to Him prematurely, having been labelled less significant, forgotten and forsaken while yet alive, suffering pains of starvation and disease.

And here is the rant about the new "pilgramage to Mecca" building..

A building used twice a year for its primary purpose - a big conference show that the majority of LDS do not watch or attend.

Sheltering only 22,000 Mormons who could just as easily stay at their own house on that day.

..that have a TV in their house to watch it (like me)
.. that have a TV in their respective ward buildings to watch it (like me).
..and in Utah, have a radio so they can hear it while they sit outside waiting in traffic or in line for the next session (not to mention internet.. and the followup Ensign).

Maybe the names of those that claimed stewardship to act in His name would be fitting tributes to such facades.

I suppose it is as fitting as naming an orphanage in India after the selfless Mother Teresa.

To each their own.
