Once you're in Salt Lake, you're already in the mountains, 4,000 feet above sea level, nestled in the arms of the Wasatch.
Perching yourself in a top-floor abode overlooking the Lion and Beehive Houses quite literally exceeds Brigham's reach, if not his grasp.
The road is beautiful, treacherous, and full of twists and turns.

Quite true, pokatator. My remarks were more directed at the historical underpinnings of that binary, than anything else. Whenever I read the MAD board I feel like I've stepped back at least a century, sometimes several. Since like the Buzzcocks, I feel a nostalgia for an age yet to come---I try as much as possible to live towards Gramsci's città futura, such time travel is doubly disconcerting.

Hmmm. When j adams mentioned "mountain retreat" I thought of Hitler's "Eagle's Nest" and the fascist retreats at Bariloche in Argentina. So, apparently, I've absorbed the same fascist imagery you mentioned.
The Eagle Gate apartments are both luxurious and convenient. There is a tunnel running under State Street from the apartment building to the underground parking below the COB complex. We used to see the Bensons out our window being wheeled to a waiting car over there. I see nothing humble or impressive about Hinckley's living there. It's about what you'd expect.

My understanding is that the entire top floor of the apartment building is for the pres. of the LDS church. He probably has as much square footage as a 'mountain retreat'.

They should call it what it is - a penthouse.
But that wouldn't sound "humble."
I recall touring the Lion House when I was a teenager, and the tour guides kept repeating that Brigham Young was a frugal man of humble tastes. I looked around the rather sumptuously furnished mansion, and I couldn't quite figure out how that worked.

Yes, that's exactly what it is.
I looked online, and couldn't find any good photos of the eagle gate apartments. When I have time some day, i'll drive by them and snap a photo. If i recall correctly, the entire top floor even looks different than the rest of the building. I've heard it's covered in bullet proof glass.

If I recall correctly the president's place of residence was referred to as a "penthouse apartment" when I used to live in Utah (years ago). This would have been in newspaper articles and such. The sense was just that the term was descriptive: the upper floor of an apartment complex.
Perhaps the supression of that adjective is in line with the revisionism of Hinckley's mainstreaming efforts?

I've heard both terms used in about equal proportion. Not sure how the media reports it.
