LDS buying up domain names (this time to spoof Christians)

Post by _cksalmon »

This time, it's a longish, sustained joke by Jeff Lindsay on a site hosted by DreamHost and registered by a "private registrant."

http://mormoncult.org/index.html

Someone bought the name, albeit only for one year. Did Lindsay pay for it?

The folks at FAIR thought it was clever enough to warrant inclusion in its most recent e-journal:

RESOURCES ON THE WEB: A GIFT FOR ANTI-MORMONS

Jeff Lindsay blogged a humorous article on Mormanity using the classic
anti-Mormon style of "comparing Mormonism to Christianity." In
addition to being an interesting defense of the LDS position,
Lindsay's approach shows how such comparison charts, the staple of
most ministries to Mormons, can be manipulated to misrepresent or
oversimply a doctrinal position to achieve a particular outcome.

Read the article:

http://www.fairlds.org/cgi-bin/site.pl?s282

The link redirects to the Mormanity blog, which doesn't indicate that Lindsay's site is, indeed, a spoof--though it obviously is.

Well, didn't LDS hear in GC that they should be using the web to further the cause?

So, at least one person has bought a controversial domain name in order to spoof contra-Mormon Christian apologetics and, one suspects, to get some Google hits.

Clever? Maybe. Silly? Definitely.

Worthy of inclusion in FAIR's e-journal? Apparently.

Fun, fun.

I found this kinda funny:

If you have ugly, nasty things to say, use this special email address for special attention from someone who cares (uh, after you click on the email address below, pay attention before you send that email!!):

Urgent at MormonCult.org

It will not link properly here, but the email address to which complaints are sent is auditmenow@irs.gov, with the subject line, "I dare you to audit me!"

Just to clarity...

The domain "mormoncult.org" was purchased on 15 Sept 2007 02:16:52 UTC (GMT) for one year. It is scheduled to become available again on 15 Sept 2008 02:16:52 UTC (GMT)--a couple months before the presidential election. Indeed, "mormoncult.org" answers most prominently to a Google search of "Mormon cult."

This appears to be manifestly related to Romney's candidacy for President of the United States of America.

So, in the run-up the to election, some Mormon has purchased a controversial domain name designed to lampoon a traditionally-Christian rejection of Mormonism, and make said rejection look ridiculous.

Bravo for Jeff Lindsay and pals. I think it's clever. The site is utterly-worthless as a source of considered information or reasoned debated, but I don't think that was the point.
