This was my point, as I tried to illustrate. It seems unfortunate to leave someone's eligibility in the hands of non-academic administrators (i.e., bishops) that have no uniform rubric to use when making the determination of whether one has successfully fulfilled one's duty in the church and properly attended meetings.
Whether or not the instant story is true doesn't change that. It did seem to be a good starting point for a discussion, without limiting it to this one particular instance.
So perhaps those who have automatically jumped into a defense position by proclaiming that we only have one side of the story can comment on that aspect of the issue, instead of instantly calling a father a liar.

Excuse me? Go somewhere else? What of those who it is the only school they could go to and still have their parents finance their education.
Thousands of students go to school every year without their parents financing their education.

It would be good if BYU cracked down on all their star athletes. I think they should start immediately with the basketball team. Maybe even enforce mandatory scripture reading. What else? There must be a number of things they could enforce that would whip these boys into God Warriors, while winnowing out those who are unwilling to jump through the hoops. Further, they should emphasize this point at recruiting time.
This would be particularly important for order at BYU where there are how many wards? And so close together there are many wards meeting at the same time in the same buildingse. Can you imagine trying to minister to a ward with that kind of transitivity?
I suppose people who have no experience with churches which actually keep membership rolls, have concerns for a specific group of people as their stewardship, etc. wouldn't understand this. But I think most people here on this board have enough experience with the Church that they should understand this.
