Nobody overt there should have called you a liar. It is such a petty endeavor to call people names. I think that is pretty general no matter what piece of the world we inhabit. The Thumper Rule.

On one of the first threads I ever participated on at FAIR, Juliann repeatedly - repeatedly - called me a liar and a plagarist. The only consequence was another mod came in after her and deleted the name-calling.
We hate to seem like we don’t trust every nut with a story, but there’s evidence we can point to, and dance while shouting taunting phrases.

What do you think should have happened? Do you think Juliann should have been banned or at least suspended? Do you think that posters on all message boards who engage in name calling should be suspended/banned? Do you think that all name calling on message boards should be deleted?

Do you have a different set of rules for FAIR or MA&D boards than you do for this board?

What should have happened is not the point. Beastie's point is certain MAAD people lay the "liar" label on anyone they don't agree with. They suffer few if any consequences.

Contrast that to this thread, wherein I, who have no moderator powers at all, said I didn't think you were a liar on this thread (I stood up for you), and Beastie, who also is not a moderator, agreed that she didn't think you were lying either. No one erased anyone's words, no one got slapped with a suspension or banning. KA isn't offended (at least, I don't think she is. She's free to speak for herself if she is). It's an example of how things are done here, and it highlights the difference between here and MAAD.

I have said I appreciated your support. And I have said I don't think anyone on any message board should call someone else a liar. Or any other name.

You said at FAIR/MA&D suffer few if any consequences. And people here suffer no consequences, either. How does this highlight a difference?

We call them as we see them here. I just didn't think you were lying. Others thought you were. They're entitled to their opinions, the same as I am.

You said at FAIR/MA&D suffer few if any consequences. And people here suffer no consequences, either. How does this highlight a difference?

Some people, a privileged few, suffer few if any consequences for calling someone a liar on MAAD. It depends on which side you're on and how much clout you have with the ownership.

Here, neither suffers unduly. No one fears the mods here. No one fears the owner.

Ooooh, don't remind us about Thumper around here.

Personally, I didn't teach my children the Thumper rule. I don't think it is especially appropriate to only say nice things, when pointing out the truth would be more helpful. The Thumper rule seems to inhibit open communication and makes liars of us all. I prefer to say what needs to be said tactfully, while Thumper would rather I not say anything at all.

Thumper was a bad girl who came from FAIR.
Thumper came not to destroy the board, but to scrawl upon it.

I know Thumper (the poster) personally. She isn't a bad person. I never knew her Thumper persona, have never seen a post under that name, but know of the reputation.

I, of course, was referring to Bambi's friend.

I don't think refraining from saying something disgusting, insulting, demeaning is lying, even when there is something which might tend to callf for insults, disgusting comments, etc. Insults, disgusting comments, demeaning comments absolutely do not accomplish any good. It makes the person so reviled even more entrenched.

Do you think that those garment waving anti-Mormon posters on Temple Square are gathering converts to themselves? Or are they engendering sympathy for a people who are quietly trying to go about their own business? Do you think CKS or Datagnan or Mercury are making me think, "Gee, maybe I have been deceived all along and Mormonism is a crock?" Or are any of you who are more civil being lead to think, "Gosh, if CKS thinks charity is an idiot, then she must be a terrible person after all."

What good does name calling do?

I think I know what you are saying is the difference bewteen MA&D and here is. Some people get toessed out of MA&D, yet others don't. You think that everyone is treated more "fairly" here. I think the problem is that you think that all boards are created equal, or at least the same.

FAIR and now MA&D aren't the same "building" as this board. MA&D is a home, a place where a "family" gather. We do invite other, non-family members into our "house." But we expect guests to behave appropriately. We don't expect them to spit on the floor, put their feet up on the furniture, or slap the hostess. When someone does these kinds of things, they are escorted out. Some of our family, become outraged and behave uncivilly back. But like family, you put up with your family.

This board is a WWF wrestling arena. No rules of manners. Hit below the belt. Screech in your face. Anything goes. No one gets kicked out. And you can stay as long as you want, but you can't complain.

She and her evil twin Boogers went on a mad rampage on this board when it first started. Nasty stuff.
