How to contact inactive families for Home Teaching

Post by _asbestosman »

If a family doesn't want to be contacted, I'm fine respecting that. However, I'm not always told that when I get my list. What do you think is the best way to find out? A phone call? A letter? Do nothing despite the fact that some less active families actually do like home teachers?

I won't if they don't want any contact. I intend to respect a person's right not to be bothered by me. If I keep calling them every month, I think they have every right to report me for harasment.

I meant the first time. Then if they tell you they don't want to be bothered, you don't call again. I didn't mean to keep calling every month after they say they don't want any contact.

That would be reasonable except for one problem. If I'm not given any information about what they've said before, then they end up getting bothered by new home teachers every time the assignments are switched. I don't think that's fair for them either and it might still be considered harasment.

Wouldn't the assigning quourm know the history of the family? Could you ask when given that assignment?

I did. He said he didn't know, but hoped that my somewhat less-active companion might know. I will ask him, but he might not know either.

In my ward we keep a do not contact list and thus we limit assigning such families. If we have an inactive that we are not sure about we have the EQ pres or HPGL call first and ask if they are willing to accept a home teacher. If they so no then they go on a DNC list. If they say yes they get assigned and the home teacher is thus spared the issue of making the determination you ask about.

How about this for an idea. If people want to be bothered every month by home teachers let them call and invite them. If a family doesn't extend an invitation take them off of the list. Showing up at peoples houses who don't want you there seems like a form of harassment to me.

If they haven't had their names removed, what's the problem in calling them and asking them if they want HTers? If they are truly getting annoyed with people calling them every time there's a new HT assignment, then they just need to have their names removed. If they're still on the rolls, it's fair game.
