"It is tough to saddle up this AM," said one top Romney adviser who spoke only on condition of anonymity.

Romney has poured more than $35 million of his personal fortune into the campaign, and after a rough Super Tuesday faces a decision of whether to spend more. Several advisers said there was a plan, in place before the Tuesday votes were counted, to begin advertising in the Washington, DC and Baltimore markets. Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia hold primaries next Tuesday.

"As of early this AM it was a go," said one of the campaign sources. "We can do the math but there are still openings," said another.

Seems his hopes are dwindling. Its been mentioned that the rejection of Romney may or may not have to do with his Mormonism. It may have to do with his perceived personal privilege and wealth, or his opportunism, or any number of other criticisms, which boil down to questions of authenticity.

To me, the guy is off-putting. It’s as simple as that. Watching him shamelessly grub for Evangelical votes, falling all over himself calling for things like the Marriage Amendment --- and then having EVs say, no dice. That was sweet.

He’s actually more of a moderate and chose to move right, especially on the social issue in a calculated move to win. But the sucking up didn’t work, too bad.

I’m a Democrat, so wouldn’t be interested in him no matter what. Plus, I’m tired of listening to him yammer on about amending the constitution to ensure that the relationship my partner and I share stays stigmatized and marginalized.

It will please me greatly to see him fail.

You think that Romney is out of touch? He's a self-made man. He has a history of turning things around for the financial better.

Unfortunately, ordinary people aren't politicians.

I'm not so sure that can be called 'unfortunate.'

It's scary, but I actually agree with Schmo here.

Idiotic, TSG. There's little or no evidence that Romney's poor showing in most of the country, not just these regions, is because of his religion.

Don

Don,

I don't think you meant to imply that TSG is idiotic, but that's sort of what it sounds like. Just FYI.

I suspect that his religion has at least something to do with his poor performance in much of the country, though I'm sure that it is also a major reason for his unmitigated success in other parts of the country. A vote for Mitt, it seems, is a vote for Mormon cultural credibility. I think that both his supporters and his opponents grasp this. Even Christians who may not think that his religion will affect his performance as president may be reluctant to allow the Mormons yet another foothold in mainstream American culture.

An opinion I probably hear more is that most feel Romney is trying to buy the presidency, even with mostly his own money. This rich guy does not sit well with them.

A recent post on the http://townhall.com/blog site:
Olbermann estimates Romney spent about a million per delegate earned pursuing the Republican nomination.

(No idea how accurate Keith was being, on this. He appeared to be doing some kind of math on one of those laptops he keeps with him on the podium).

Matthews says, "That's an expensive hobby."

Hmmm that would be what, I think he has over 200 delegates so 200million? He does not have enough money to do that.

Sure he has spent some of his money. Big deal. It means he is less beodlign to special interests if he can be his own man.

regardless, it looks like McCain is the man now.

Exactly. This is a very good reason not to vote for guy smiley and the country agrees.

And what does one term this? What is it when decides simply based on race, sex or religion?

Tokenism.

Reality
And crawling on the planet's face
Some insects called the human race
Lost in time
And lost in space...and meaning
