And the problem with this is... what? There are plenty of otherwise intelligent people who are bigots. That this should be a question around here is really quite funny.

And, I am giving them the further credit of having calculated the likelihood of a Huckabee victory. Unless one is a complete dreamer, a vote for Huckabee would have been, at least on some level, a refusal to vote for Mitt. It is not a strategy for a winning Huckabee. Obviously people's motivations are complex, but bigotry is definitely prominent among them in this case.

I really have no way of knowing. Many would have thought that George W. Bush, based on what he said in his campaign, would have been a much better president than he turned out to be.

Nope. He would have endorsed McCain had that been the case. His not doing so is a pretty clear signal that he is either not expecting, or does not want, the VP slot.

It's day 1 of his having dropped out. There's still plenty of time for him to endorse McCain.

Anyhow, we shall see. Who else on the Republican side has much name recognition, who might be prevailed upon to take McCain's VP slot?

Oh, and what's with this "Bloomberg might join the race now" crap? Half the primaries are over already. McCain's got like half of the delegates he needs to win the nomination. How could Bloomberg possible jump into the race at this late date and actually get the nod? Could he even get on the ballot in the states that haven't yet already had their primaries? I just don't see how that's supposed to work.

I can't find it. But someone posted the text at MAD in the politics folder.
WK: "Joseph Smith asserted that the Book of Mormon peoples were the original inhabitants of the americas"
Will Schryver: "No, he didn’t." 3/19/08
Still waiting for Will to back this up...

I know that Romney's delegates have cost dearly, in financial terms; but he's still been the most obvious rival to McCain, and polls quite well with his party's staunch-conservative base. I didn't expect him to win the Republican nomination, but it seemed like a significant possibility. What might he hope to accomplish by dropping out?

The most selfless reason I can think of is that he sees how his party is fracturing over the divide between himself and McCain. If Fox News and the like continue to were to continue over the coming months to tout Romney as a true conservative while bashing McCain as a Hillary Clinton doppelganger, it would threaten the party's cohesiveness going into the November elections, should McCain (as is quite likely) get the nomination. Dropping out would help the party more likely win the presidency. It would also have two up-sides for Romney. He would be spared the expense and frustration of a likely losing bid, and he would avoid being seen as a spoiler of the general election for the Republicans, making him a much more vialble candidate for future primary elections.

Or...does Romney expect his supporters to now line up behind Huckabee, which would actually strengthen the conservative-moderate divide in his party?

Has anyone talked to Mitt about this lately? Could we get him on here for comment? After all, this is Mormon Discussions, and he is the Mormon candidate....

What are you smokin?

McCain has the best shot the Republicans have. Even I'll will be voting for him.

As for Romney, he can crawl back under the rock he came out from other.

The common speculation is that Bloomberg left the Republican party with an eye toward possibly running as a third-party candidate. He wouldn't jump in as a Republican now.

Nah, I think he's angling to fill the vacancy in the Quorum of the 12. ;)

Now that Romney has dropped out of the Republican race. It will be interestin if Huckleby continues his effort. What would be very interesting is if Huckleby was able to prevent McCain from getting to the magic number of deligates. If the convention goes past round one of voting then Romney could end up being a King maker.
...
I hope Huckleby has this success.

I note that Romney did not realease his deligates to McCain.
