Who exactly said that? And how up in the leadership hierarchy were they? Because I don't recall ever hearing anything like that from our leaders.

There were threads on MAD (LDS) that reiterated this verbatim. Matter of fact the only people arguing against this was Uncle Dale and I.
I thought that many LDS Twitter at how mainstream Christian Churches are not as uber special as LDS because they have paid clergy -- the thought stems from there then spirals down into the absurd thought that preachers/priests/etc... just go into it to get rich.

And yet, folks like Mitt Romney attempt to make the LDS Church appear as though it were mainstream. What is there to do with all of this?

How many rich preachers do you now, Jersey? I'm thinking back over my entire 55 years and I don't know/remember any rich preachers. How about you?

I don't recall having ever heard anything like that either (notwithstanding BRM's "whore of Babylon" remarks, of course). What I *have* heard, repeatedly, are rather dark insinuations about these other churches being the tool of Satan. These insinuations usually come in the form of stories about how such-and-such felt "uneasy," or "felt the Spirit leave," etc. upon visiting said church, or reading materials from said church, etc.

I guess I haven't paid close enough attention to the Ensign or Conference lately. I don't ever remember "uneasy" or "tool of Satan". Good grief.
Let's also not forget the pre-1991 Mormon representation of a certain preacher out to make money, and being instructed in what to say by Satan. I'm sure that had no effect on how Mormons viewed ministers.

No; no---as I said, these typically come in the form of stories: FPRs, if you will. I think that Church PR knows better than to do this kind of thing in public.

Go look in the politics folder -- LDS (Juliann herself was in there fussing with me) saying that mainstream Churches recruit to get more money.
