No, but I also don't want to start eating something only to find that it's been spoiled.

As I said in Don's thread, I am dismayed when an otherwise interesting discussion here in the Terrestrial forum gets totally derailed and destroyed by petty personal attacks and baiting. When that happens, the thread rarely, if ever, recovers. And it's a damn shame.

I understand that, but to continue the buffet analogy, once you taste something that's been spoiled, how do you react? Do you keep on eating it, or move on to something else?

Yes, sometimes, threads get derailed, but it's my opinion that if there's still life in a discussion, it will survive. If a discussion starts to "go downhill" then it's likely that all there was to be said about that topic's been covered (at least, for those involved). I can't remember a time when a conversation appeared to be preempted due to some off-topic remarks. Delayed, sure, but not completely killed, unless it was ready to be.

That's my sense of what happens, anyway. And usually, if the conversation does have more life, someone starts up a new thread for it.

I don't know... I find this place very entertaining. I have a feeling that what entertains me others might call 'noise.' The last thing this place needs is moderation to keep the content dry, or suppress its entertainment value. I don't begrudge those who yearn for something different, but I would if it were at the expense of the fun we have here now.

To be very clear on my opinion - what I'm suggesting is perhaps a bit more 'direct' moderation only in the Celestial forum.
I think that will actually DRAW many people there, because they will get to have the discussions they want and actually feeling like it will be TRUE that they will have the discussions they want to have without unreasonable interruption. Therefore, pressure off the Terrestial. Therefore, less of a problem if the Terrestial is a little free for all. (i.e. it'd be less of a problem if we leave the Terrestial 'as it is now').

That's ALL I'm saying. More 'direct' moderation in the Celestial room only.

When I say direct, I mean more than moving and splitting.

Oh, and while we're at it - is there an easier way to navigate between forums without returning to the Forum Index? Minor nit, to be sure. Of course, maybe this exists and I haven't figured it out.

No changes are necessary. The board is terrific as is.

At the bottom of all pages is a "select a forum" drop down box. JFYI.

I like the board the way it is. I voted no (but I agree that another moderator might be necessary, just to help out our great, overworked ones). I think self-moderation is the best way to go. I know that I won't contribute to posts in the Celestial forum, so I don't go there. I like the diversity of opinion in the terrestrial. I like the crude humor of the telestial. I really enjoy the off-topic forum and spend most of my time there now. I've been called a moron and/or an idot by fellow posters. Oh well. I'll get by. As I've said in the past, if anyone has a problem with something I say, PM me and let me know. I know how to use the "edit" function.

I really enjoy the board...thanks to Shades and others who put time and effort into this.

D'oh - so there is! It appears quite gray on my screen, so I've actually never noticed it. I'll offer as an excuse that I had not yet had my morning latte when I posted that.

Carry on - please ignore Skippy the Brain Dead's prior post.

Oh by the way - I have absolutely NO opinion on how this board should be run. None at all. That would be daft.
...if any earlier posts seem to indicate that I do, that's Bond hijacking my account and playing silly buggers.

Please stop it Bond. It's not funny anymore...

I don't think there should be an "ignore" function.

I think the ignore feature on a forum is vile. Think about it. You're posting comments and you don't even know there are people who don't see them. You've been made invisible and you don't even know it. A virtual sharia law has been imposed, and you don't even know it. Foul. Venal. Blech. Too bad people who enjoy freedom are so quick to vote it away. What a shame.
