The Wall Street Journal ran an article today describing what it called "virulent anti-Mormonism" that is far deeper and more widespread than most members realize, and what the Church is doing to counter-act it. Many Church leaders were reluctant to respond to some of the worst critics for fear of being seen as taking sides in a political contest. With Governor Romney out of the race, however, the gloves are coming off.
Some of the worst offenders, such as Huckabee's 'innocent' question as to whether we believed that Jesus Christ and Satan are brothers implying that we are devil worshippers, and Larry O'Donnell's rant about Joseph Smith, calling him a criminal, pro-slavery, and a bigot, were way out of line. Indeed, some of the stuff that people have been freely saying in the media and on the Internet is straight out of the same playbook as The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. The WSJ noted that Elder Ballard's YouTube appearance answering the question "Are Mormons Christian" had received some 29,000 hits, but that a clip from The God Makers had received over 900,000. Hate is far more popular than truth.
To a certain extent, of course, the critics are their own worst enemies. September Dawn was almost universally panned as blatant anti-Mormon fantasy, yet it sold quite well in some quarters.
Historically, our response to this type of criticism has been, as noted by Armand Maus, "to sorrowfully turn away and close the door." We can no longer afford to keep doing this. If politicians find that they can get votes by trashing the Church, it is only a matter of time before someone starts promising a "final solution to the Mormon problem." The Church's web site has announced that Elders Ballard and Cook will be working to publicly counter the worst of this bigotry. (emphasis added)

But I do think that most members would be shocked at how bad things are. I personally believe we are only a few steps away from concentration camps and gas ovens -- the hate is that bad -- but that the vast majority of members, including most of those posting here, are whistling in the dark, hoping that the monsters will just go away if they are ignored.
