If you were hiding Jews from Nazis and told them you weren't, are you a liar?
If one these instances are the only times you lie, would you be insulted if I said you were a liar?
If you tell your child that she better behave or the boogeyman is going to come and burn her flesh and eat it with worms for all eternity, when in actual fact you know very well that no such thing will happen, does that make you a liar? And if you recruit a lot of really credible people to help reinforce your lie, does that make you a liar? Because I think that's a better analogy.
How about this one: if you could snap your fingers and make the Nazis disappear, does it make much sense to compromise your principles by lying to them? If you could snap your fingers and Sarah would be covered by divine protection, does it make much sense to ask her husband not only to lie in order to protect her, but to compromise her integrity in the process?
Better yet: if you threaten somebody with a flaming sword lest he stop taking dozens of wives, and then commission him to go tell all his wives to keep their mouths shut about it, are you a liar? Or just a misogynist?
