I missed that. What did people say Hinckley lied about? Whether God was once a man?
That's General Leo. He could be my friend if he weren't my enemy. eritis sicut dii I support NCMO

Some reports say that he was less than truthful with police investigators during the Hofmann episode.
Runtu wrote:I find that comparison frankly bizarre. And doesn't bringing in the Nazis violate Godwin's law?
I could reformulate the point without mentioning Nazis, but at MDB we can use this efficient shortcut rather me having to type out that sometimes lies are better than the truth when innocent lives are at stake.
I don't expect anyone here to like my comparison. I'm simply trying to explain that most LDS do not see Joseph Smith's lies (if they think he told any) to be the sort of malicious lies that a con-artist tells others. Frankly I expect people here to call Joseph Smith a lying con-artist. I would just think you'd expect MADB to slap you with punishment for saying it.

I can't remember - it was probably either this or the Hofmann affair. Someone called him a liar or said he was lying shortly after his death, and the mods stepped in and said that would no longer be allowed.
We hate to seem like we don’t trust every nut with a story, but there’s evidence we can point to, and dance while shouting taunting phrases.

I'm interested. Is there a link somewhere?
If i remember correctly, it had something to do with the church (hinckley) denying they had the mclellin collection after they discovered they indeed did have it. But I could be totally off.
Even if you don't care about the hofmann story, it's really an interesting, keep you on the edge of your seat, book.
WK: "Joseph Smith asserted that the Book of Mormon peoples were the original inhabitants of the americas"
Will Schryver: "No, he didn’t." 3/19/08
Still waiting for Will to back this up...

It was more along the lines of Hinckley distancing himself from Hofmann in the police interviews, acting like he had rarely if ever met Hofmann and insisting that it was other people who worked with Hofmann to procure documents. If I recall correctly, the lead investigator wrote "LIES" in the margin when he was interviewing Hinckley. I'll look it up when I have a moment.
asbestosman wrote:Furthermore, the phrase "the lying god of Joseph Smith" also seems to be calling Joseph Smith a liar. The word "liar" is too strong when one is talking about white lies. It is insulting.
Joseph Smith was a liar. That wasn't what I was trying to communicate, however.
Does anyone here think Joseph told only white lies?
I think in conjunction with Joseph's narcissism, he believed that he was tell white lies.
