I had another conversation with my shocked colleague. He said that he had done some research and agreed with me about the practice of polyandry. He also said that he understood that the women involved were invited to receive their own testimony of the practice and entered into it willingly. I agreed with him. He then said that he was glad we were not living under that law anymore. Once again I agreed.

So, no testimony shakeage was achieved (I tried, so help me). I figure it's my responsibility when asked to give the truth as I understand it.

Did he say where he researched it?
WK: "Joseph Smith asserted that the Book of Mormon peoples were the original inhabitants of the americas"
Will Schryver: "No, he didn’t." 3/19/08
Still waiting for Will to back this up...

Nope. I just talked to him for less than a minute down on the production floor on my way to lunch. I gave him some references to look at, but beyond that I don't know.

I think it's a positive thing that he at least knows that polyandry was indeed practiced. It's fine with me if he can absorb that knowledge into his faith.

I actually like the approach you used. He will respect you for not trying to "de-convert" him, so if something else comes up that is problematic for him, he will trust you to give him the straight truth.

If I told them the details about my departure from the faith, then I just know I would be sending these kids to bed at night worrying.

No Dartagnon, those "kids', most of them, are far, far stronger than you, and most of them will never take your intellectually and spiritually craven path.

I hear this over and over, that somehow leaving the church is an act of cowardice. In what way do you see it as being cowardly and "craven"?

It seems leaving the religion of your family and ancestors, while living in an area where that religion dominates the culture, takes tremendous strength and courage. The easier thing to do would be to pretend to be a good Mormon while keeping your doubts hidden from view.

I don't see how Mormons can call exmormons cowards. If someone leaves the religion of their family to join Mormonism, and that person gets cut off from their family because of it, they are viewed as brave and heroic by Mormons. Yet those same people are considered cowards when they leave Mormonism for something else.

Its that coward's way out, very much like political and social liberalism.

That part about the personal thread may be due to Skylla not having read the thread and perhaps just getting a faulty update from the UMW hen house.
