It is kind of true that people buy into crazy stuff it it happened a long time ago, or at least before their life time. None of the current church leadership would ever, ever have believed Smith for a second if he tried to "restore the gospel" today. They would consider him foul, reprobate, and a sex deviant. He wouldn't even be given a glance.
